~Po-Tay-Toes!~
This is both Sam and Frodo, but mostly Sam

"You don't talk much, do you?" Sam asked suddenly, making you look over at him.
You shrugged, looking back down at the chunk of wood you were whittling.
He hummed, watching you with a calculating look. "You don't talk at all do you?"
You shook your head, keeping your eyes on your work.
"She's mute, Samwise," Gandalf butt in, puffing on his pipe. "Been that way for a while."
"Has she always been that way?" Pippin asked, pausing his banter with Merry. Everyone in the Fellowship was listening by now. Even Boromir, who sat sharpening his sword.
"No," Gandalf said slowly. "But that is not my story to tell."
The hobbits all sighed. They knew it'd be a long while until they heard the story, if at all.
And a long time it was.
You had gone with Sam and Frodo the day the orcs attacked, wanting to be there to help them.
They both certainly appreciated it.
"How long has it been since you've spoken?" Sam asked suddenly one night, as the three of you were laying down to sleep.
You thought for a moment, and then held up ten of your fingers, then three.
"Thirteen what? Months?" You shook your head. "Years?" You nodded. "Great Valar, that's a long while. Do you think you'll ever speak again?" Sam asked.
You thought for a moment, then shrugged. You wanted to, but you were afraid to. What if you've forgotten how?

Sam was preparing supper for the umpteenth time, trying not to snap at Smeagol who was whining about Hobbit food.
"Po-tay-toes!" He finally snapped, glaring at the creature.
You grinned at his dismay, shoulders shaking with silent laughs.
Sam stared dismally at you, exasperated. "Well why don't you try it!" He said, crossing his arms. "Go on! Po-tay-toes!"
Your head dropped, and you stared at your hands, playing with your fingers.
"Go on, then!" Sam prodded.
"Sam, let her be," Frodo scolded.
Sam shook his head. "No. She's gotta talk sooner or later!"
You looked at him, but he didn't notice as he was arguing with Frodo.
"That's for her to decide!"
"It's not natural, that's what it is!"
"It was her decision!"
"She's gotta talk, Frodo!"
"Why?!"
You watched them argue back and forth, head moving from side to side as each presented their side of the argument.
You grew frustrated.
"P-" you started, freezing. They didn't notice.
"Po...po...tay...to..."
Sam and Frodo went silent, both turning to face you. "[Y/N]? Did you just speak?"
"Y-yes," you stuttered, nodding your head.
Both hobbits launched themselves at you, hugging you tightly while laughing. "You spoke! You spoke!"
You laughed as well, hugging them back just as tightly. "I a-am! Tha-ank you S-Sam!" You forgot how good it was to laugh.
He just grinned at you, blushing as you pressed a grateful kiss to his cheek.
