There were pros and cons of being the girlfriend of an NBA player. Being on the other side of the country while he and his team embarked on a week-long road trip was definitely one of those cons.

Kayla was currently in that situation. Her boyfriend, Aaron Gordon, was staying in Sacramento for the the beginning of a string of road games against Californian teams. While she was accustomed to him being away, she felt lonelier than usual.

It was her birthday, and the man she wanted to spend it with the most was thousands of miles away.

As Kayla got ready for work, she couldn't resist sending Aaron a quick text. The couple had a routine of FaceTiming each other after she returned from work when he was away from home, but she still felt comforted whenever they texted each other.

Her phone dinged, alerting her that a new iMessage had been delivered to her. A small smile spread on her face when she realized Aaron replied to her. The young woman was surprised at how quickly her boyfriend responded.

Kayla didn't reply and instead opted to stare at her boyfriend's message. She wasn't sure what to be most surprised about—that Aaron had just admitted that he loved her for the first time ever, or that he had just admitted he loved her through iMessage.

Neither of them sent another message for several minutes. Kayla concluded Aaron had been half-asleep and couldn't fully comprehend what he was texting her. It must have been the 4 AM in him talking. Although she now felt like she was walking on clouds—he just admitted he loved her—she brushed off his text until a new notification popped up.
