Chapter 30 (Part 1 of 2)

Rafe slowed the car as he approached the tall metal gate that guarded the entrance of his pack land. Something wasn’t right he thought to himself.  The gate was standing wide open and when he looked closer it didn’t look like anyone was in the guard house.

A couple of hours before he decided to go to town and see if he could find Tayla but had no luck.

She wasn’t anywhere to be found.  He checked everywhere he could think of that she might go and even tried to use their mate bond to contact her.  It was useless though.  He still couldn’t break past the barriers that she had erected to reach her. Every time he attempted it he was confronted with a staggering brick wall of silence.

It was frustrating.  All he wanted to do was talk to her, tell her the truth for once in his life.

It hadn’t been fair to her that she had to find out about Dava through the sacred mate bond they currently shared.  She deserved so much better than that... she deserved so much better than a man like him.

The last thing he wanted for her now was to be blindsided when he made his intentions known tonight at the council meeting about his true mate.

Tayla was a good woman with a good heart.  Over the years they shared together he couldn’t deny that she had been good to him.  Over and over she tried to fill that empty hole in his chest with true friendship. She’d given up everything for him.  She even gave him a son.

But none of this was enough for Rafe. Not anymore.

There was only one thing in this world that sweet Tayla couldn’t give him.

It was someone that he’d decided he could not longer stay away from him.

Dava Morale.

The beautiful, willowy blond angel that fate had long ago destined to be his soulmate.

Earlier today when she looked up at him with her wide innocent eyes, he knew then that he couldn’t fight it any longer.  What he needed was to be with the other half of his heart, the perfect companion to his soul. She was an obsessive compulsion in his blood, an addiction he couldn’t live without.

And after tonight, once he broke his ties with Tayla, he wouldn’t have to.

Dava would be his forever.

Taking his time he slowly pulled through the gates, peering cautiously out into the night, looking for any signs of the guards that should have been on duty.

The moon was full and he could feel her pull tugging at his wolf.  The hairs on the back of his neck stood straight as stick pins and he gripped the steering wheel just a little bit tighter.

Out of the corner of his eye Rafe thought he saw what looked like a dark shadow dart to the side of him.  It was no more than a shadow shrouded in a blanket of darkness but he held his attention.

He slammed down hard on the brakes and stopped the car.  When he looked again, it was gone.

“What the hell-” he muttered under his breath and suddenly broke off when an enormous grey wolf landed with a heavy thud on the hood of his car. The animals lips were pulled back in an angry snarl, his sharp canine teeth bared and rivulets of saliva dangled in long strands from his mouth.
