 Chapter 13

Michelle quickly stepped through the airport crowds trying to get through customs and to her luggage. Her stomach turned as she thought about Sarah and the orphanage she left behind. David reassured her that everything would be fine, but she still couldn't find peace within herself.

The noise of greetings and airport employees shouting drowned out Madison calling Michelle's name. As she was bending down to grab her duffle bag, a hand gripped her shoulder. She quickly stood up after getting a secure hold on her luggage. Turning around, she was relieved to see Madison.

"Hey!" Madision chirped.

Not far behind her friend, stood a man with dark hair and handsome features. Michelle was intrigued to know the story behind him.

"How have you been? How was the flight?" Madison added as she picked up Michelle's luggage and passed it off to the striking fellow. With a few steps she and Madison separated themselves from him.

"It was good. The hardest part was getting to JFK since it was a pretty long flight." Michelle looked behind her before inquiring, "Who is that guy?"

Madison looked behind, "Oh him? That's Ren. I'll tell you more later. We're staying at his hotel."

"Wait what?" Michelle's question went unanswered as Ren joined them at the car.

Once in the vehicle, Madison hammered Michelle with questions about her life and work in China. Michelle answered obligingly, but really she wanted to know more about Ren.

Ana and Meg bid farewell to Diego and promised to meet him at the Embassy the following morning.

"I might be a bit late, though. I was able to secure us an FBI agent to help with our search," Ana reported.

"See you ladies tomorrow, then," Diego said giving each of the girls a hug before leaving.

The girls walked slowly back to their villa, enjoying the remnants of music and the clear sky.

"How's everything in Kansas?" Ana asked, surprising herself at it's randomness.

"It's good. It's getting better! Elliott has officially launched the opening of the brewery, so he's been working a lot," Meg's voiced trailed off as she started tracing her stomach.

Ana caught Meg's motion out of the corner of her eye. She reviewed her friend trying to gauge what she was thinking.

"When is it due?" Ana asked. Meg went rigged and quickly turned to her.

"What? I...how did you know?" Meg's voice was shaky.

"I think my first clue was that you didn't want a Long Island Ice Tea, " Ana joked, offering her friend a smile.

Meg laughed. "I guess you're right. When do I turn down a good drink?"

"I bet by the time we are back home Elliott will have the nursery all ready and full of red and blue," Ana added.

Meg was silent. She fumbled with her hands as the girls continued walking to their villa.

"Meg?" Ana wasn't sure what to say or ask.

"I haven't told him," she murmured.

Ana remained silent. Who was she to reprimand a friend? "I am sorry you've had to travel all this way and do this alone," she finally said. "Can we at least tell the other girls?"

Meg took a deep breath before saying, "Sure."

When the two arrived at the Villa, the lights were on indicating that Madison was back – hopefully with Michelle in tow.

"Have you guys eaten?" Madison asked as she flipped the pancakes over in the skillet.

"No, not yet," Ana quipped as she and Meg entered the house. "How was the hot date?"

"Is that what you were on?" Michelle asked as she descended down the stairs.

"Michelle!" Meg exclaimed, greeting the girl with a hug.

"Welcome to the party," Ana added.

"Glad to finally be here. So what's this about a date?"

"Did you meet Ren when she picked you up?" Meg inquired. "Isn't he gorgeous?"

The girls laughed but Madison continued to scowl. "Why do you guys have to talk about him? Seriously, he isn't all that."

"She's blind," Ana joked as she and the other two girls joined Madison in the kitchen.

"I am not blind!" Madison protested.

"Debatable," Meg added.

"Apparently, Mr. Ren wasn't good enough for Mads here in college so it's basically a story of unrequited love on his part."

"Please, he doesn't love me. He is just a big flirt."

"Yet, he gives us a villa to stay in...free of charge," Michelle said motioning to the room around them. "Just to flirt?"

"He knows no bounds," Madison fumed.

"This girl is ridiculous!" Michelle boomed.

Ana and Meg guffawed. Their laughter rang throughout the house.

Hoping to shut them up, Madison served up hot pancakes topped with fresh mango and syrup. The other girls quickly grabbed their forks and chowed down.
