My chest burned and my ankle was aching badly, but I didn't stop. If I stopped, I would probably just collapse and let the police arrest me again.
"We're almost there!" Michael shouted and hope blossomed in my chest, giving me the drive to continue forward. I heard sirens behind of us and I cursed under my breath.
"We need to hurry! They found us!" C-note yelled, urging us forward. I could see the airstrip from where we were and I was about to start praising the gods. The sirens were getting louder and I saw the plane up ahead. I frowned when I saw that it started moving.
"Over here!" I shouted, waving my arms up in the air. The plane got closer and we all started shouting.
"Damn! No! Don't leave!" Abruzzi shouted, frantically waving his arms up in the air.
"No!" We all stopped in the middle of the runway, waving our arms to get the attention of the pilot. It was no use. The plane flew over us and we turned, watching it go.
"No! No, no, no..." Michael cried out, bending over to catch his breath. I felt helpless, like there was no hope. Our only means of escape left us for the cops. The sirens were so loud, I could barely hear myself breathe. I looked at Lincoln and he had a distraught look on his face.
"What do we do now?" Sucre asked, rubbing his head and looking in the direction the sirens were coming from. Michael frowned, his chest heaving up and down.
"Mikey?" I called out, worrying as I saw the cop cars driving fast through the grass.
"We run." There was no hesitation as we turned and ran in the opposite direction of the sirens, into the dark. I didn't look to see where I was going because there was no time.
"This way!" I heard Sucre yell.
"Stop and put your hands up! You are completely surrounded!" The cops yelled. A helicopter circled around us and I looked behind me for a split second to see them get out of their cars, guns drawn. My ankle started to throb with pain and I gasped, trying to keep up with the others.
"Melanie, come on!" Lincoln shouted. My chest was on fire, but I couldn't stop.
I pushed myself forward, catching up with Lincoln, who was in the middle of the pack. The barking dogs, sirens, and even the helicopter's sound got fainter as we ran deeper into the woods. My foot got caught on an uprooted branch and I fell hard. I groaned in pain, my jaw throbbing from the impact. I was too weak to get back up, so I stayed down, trying to catch my breath.
"Mel!" Sucre shouted. His voice sounded far away, but I knew he was coming closer. My vision danced and clouded over, the figures that I could see coming towards me blurry and distorted. My head pounded and all I wanted to do was close my eyes.
"I'm so tired." I whispered, gripping the leaves on the ground. I heard someone kneel on the ground next to my head and a hand touched my forehead.
"She's burning up. Maybe we should rest here for the night." Abruzzi suggested. I heard the others agree and they sat down not too far from each other.
"Get some sleep. We're leaving as soon as there's light." Michael said. I didn't open my eyes, even when I felt someone slide underneath my head, putting my head in his lap. I immediately knew it was Lincoln, by the way he was stroking my hair and mumbling to himself. The last thing I heard before I drifted off was the faraway sound of a siren.
* * *
A buzzing sound filled my ear and I swatted at it, sighing when the sound went away. The sun burned my eyelids, forcing me to open them. Wait, the sun? I shot up, instantly regretting it when a dizzy sensation took over me for a few seconds. When I was sure I was fine, I looked around and saw all of the men sleeping. I looked at where I was sleeping and saw that my head was on Lincoln's lap the entire time and he was sleeping on his back.
Everyone looked so at peace, but Michael did say that we had to leave as soon as there was light and it seemed like there was light in the sky for a while now, based on where the sun was in the sky.
"Psst! Guys!" Abruzzi and Michael shifted, but that was it. "Hey! Get up!" This time, no one moved a muscle. I pursed my lips and walked forward a bit, where my voice would reach everyone. "Get the fuck up! The police are right behind us!" I all but screamed. I'd never seen men scramble up as quickly as they did, looking around frantically. I burst out laughing, slapping my knee.
C-note smacked his lips. "Man, that ain't funny." Michael said nothing, but we made eye contact and he smiled a bit. Lincoln groaned as he stretched, my eyes following the ripple of his biceps. Man, he was fit. I stopped drooling over my husband and made sure everyone was up, but before I could start speaking, sirens filled the air.
"Aw shit, not again." Sucre groaned, getting on his feet. From this angle, I could see a bunch of men running towards our direction.
"We need to go now." Abruzzi said, looking towards the sound.
"Then let's go." Michael said. "This way." He pointed in front of him and we started running. Lincoln ran next to me and he glanced at me, giving me a once over.
"You good, babe?" he asked quietly and I nodded. I felt rejuvenated. Yesterday, I felt like I was about to pass out and I really needed that rest. It did me good because I wasn't lagging behind like I usually was. We tore through the trees and when we were sure the cops were far away, we stopped to catch our breaths.
"I thought I thought this out." Sucre huffed, putting his hands on his knees and breathing deeply. "You saw all those guys back there?" he asked, gesturing to where we just came from. Michael put his hands on his waist and walked forward, seeming to be thinking.
"They're back there and we're up here. That's what matters right now." he said, his blue eyes a bit wide. He wiped the sweat off his face and I kept my mouth shut, just looking at the group. My throat was parched, but there was no water around.
"Yeah, and how long is that going to last?" Sucre asked, worry threaded in his voice. C-note put his hands on top of his head.
"Yeah and we have nowhere to go, thanks to Abruzzi's magically disappearing jet," he snapped, pointing an accusing finger at John. Abruzzi walked towards him.
"Hey, you were never going to be on that plane, brother." I frowned.
"What do you mean?" I asked folding my arms. Abruzzi looked at me and then walked over to me.
"The jet was only meant for a few people, darling." he said lowly, putting his hands on my shoulders.
"And those few people were going to be who?" I cocked my head. John smirked and flicked my chin.
"Don't worry your pretty little head about that."
"Alright, get your hands off her." I heard Lincoln order from behind me. John put his hands up and walked backwards, stopping a little bit away from me.
"And don't think I don't know where you were going either, Scofield." Michael frowned and looked at C-note.
"Where am I going?" Michael asked, facing C-note, who started to step up to Michael.
"Oh, I don't know. Utah?" Michael froze, his jaw ticking. "When were you planning on telling us about the money, man?"
"What money?" Sucre asked, suddenly interested in the conversation. Michael closed his eyes and sighed as all of the men came closer, wondering what C-note was talking about.
"Five million dollars that Westmoreland planted in the desert in Utah." Sucre's eyes widened and he looked at Abruzzi before looking back at Michael.
"You don't know what you're talking about." Michael said in a low voice, walking away.
"You wish I didn't know." C-note countered, a smirk on his face. Lincoln tapped my arm and followed after Michael and I did the same, not wanting be hear them argue over a dead man's money.
"Wait, wait. What money?" I heard Sucre ask. My hand found its way to the necklace Charles gave me and I gripped it, trying hard not to snap at them. They were worried about his money when we needed to find a way to get away from the law enforcement that were after us at the moment.
