"I need to make a phone call." Lincoln said, letting go of my hand. He took out the phone Michael had gave him and walked over to the other side of the warehouse. I looked around and let my thoughts wander.
"What are you thinking about?" Michael asked quietly.
"LJ." I answered honestly. "There's not a day that goes by that I don't think of him."
"Well, you will be able to see him soon." he commented and a pang went through my chest as I realized I never told him that LJ was dead.
"I didn't tell you?" I whispered, not believing that it hadn't been brought up before. Michael's brow furrowed at my question.
"What are you talking about? Tell me what?" I didn't answer him because I heard Lincoln gasp and I turned to see him stumble backwards and fall onto his knees. I didn't think twice as I ran up the stairs to where he was.
"Linc? Linc, what's wrong?" I asked, kneeling down next to him. His breath was coming out in short gasps and he had his hand pressed to his mouth, eyes wide. His phone was still in his hand and he was shaking violently.
"V-veronica. She's dead." he whispered and my heart sank. I scooted closer to him and wrapped my arms around him, his head automatically falling onto my chest. He gripped me tightly and started to cry, his large frame shaking my body as he trembled. I put one hand on his head, pulling him close.
I closed my eyes, tears leaking out the corners for my friend. She didn't deserve to die. I knew she was investigating Steadman's murder, but I didn't think that in doing so, it would cost her her life. Lincoln would definitely be taking it the hardest because they were close in age and she grew up with us. We stayed like that for a while until his sobs subsided and he just clung to me.
"I'm sorry." he whispered when he gathered himself together. He lifted his head and stood up, wiping his face.
"Hey, don't be sorry for having emotions. You were close to her, so I understand." I told him, standing up. Michael put his hand on Lincoln's shoulder and squeezed.
"I heard them murder her while we were on the phone. Right before that, she said she had found Steadman and that he was alive." My jaw dropped at the news and Michael's reaction was probably identical to mine.
"Wait, Terrence is alive?" Michael asked, frowning. Lincoln nodded.
"That's what she said."
"Hey, Burrows, Scofield." All three of us turned around at the sound of Abruzzi's voice.
"What's up?" Michael asked, hopping down to the main level. I walked with Lincoln down the stairs, glancing at him every once in a while. His face was hardened and I could tell he was angry, so I didn't say anything. I would just stay by his side for comfort.
"We're gonna head out now. Thanks for everything." C-note shook Michael's hand, as did Abruzzi.
"No problem. Be safe." Michael said and Sucre pulled him into a tight hug, patting his back.
"You be safe too, papí." Sucre turned to me with a sly smile on his face. "Watch out for Lincoln, you hear?" I smiled and walked into his arms, hugging him.
"Oh I will, trust me. Say hi to Maricruz for me. Even though she doesn't know me." I laughed, patting his shoulder. Lincoln shook his hand and nodded at him, not saying a word.
"Bye guys." Michael and I waved until they were all gone, leaving me, Michael, and Lincoln behind.
"So, what are we gonna do now?" I asked, looking at Michael. He sighed and shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Well, since the agent chased us away, we're nowhere close to the car. But we can hop on a train until we get close enough to where the car is and then hop off." I raised my eyebrow.
"When you say hop, you really mean like on a cargo train?" I asked and Michael nodded.
"Come on. There's one that should be passing by us now." I started to follow Michael out the door, but I turned around to see that Lincoln was still in the same spot, lost in thought. I walked over to him and put my hands on his cheeks, raising his head to look at me.
"Lincoln, there was nothing you could've done to stop what happened." His eyes snapped to mine, pain in its depths.
"I could've stopped her from investigating. If I would've known-"
"You couldn't have known, Linc. Plus, you know she wouldn't have stopped even if you asked her, so stop beating yourself up about it." I said firmly. "How about you focus on trying to survive and getting out the country and then you can wallow in your tears." A small smile appeared on his face before disappearing just as quickly.
"What would I do without you?" he whispered, putting his hands over mine. I leaned forward and kissed him, loving the feel of his soft lips against mine. I pulled away and saw his eyes open slowly.
"Wallow." I answered, winking. I grabbed his hand, our fingers interlocking, and we followed Michael out to the train tracks. I squinted as the sun blinded me and the wind blew my hair back. We walked along the train tracks until we heard the rumble of the train coming. The horn blew loudly and I saw the light from the front of the train.
"Here it comes!" Michael shouted above the noise. It wasn't going very fast, so we would be able to hop in fairly easily. A few cars passed by but they were closed. My eyes flicked from side to side, trying to spot an open train car.
"There!" I pointed at an open one that was coming up.
"Get ready! I'll go first!" Michael bent his knees and jumped, landing in the car easily, as if he did this all his life.
"Come on, Linc." I said, starting jog as the train picked up speed. Lincoln jogged next to me, but gestured for me to go next. Michael held his arms out and I jumped, grabbing onto his arms. He pulled me up and I slid in the train car, a burst of adrenaline rushing through me. I scrambled to my feet and leaned out, watching Lincoln run along with the train.
"Jump, Linc!" Michael shouted, reaching out to grab his brother. Lincoln picked up speed and jumped. Michael grabbed him, but I guess Lincoln's weight was too much because he slipped. I ran forward and grabbed Lincoln's other arm and together, we pulled him into the cart, just as Lincoln ran out of ground.
