"Okay, so how am I Dakota's selected when there already is one," I was so confused, this must have been the fifth time I asked this.
"Yes, how is that possible," My mom was sitting right next to me looking more confused than I felt. "We know the girl who was picked from the lottery. In fact she used to work here,"
"The original candidate was found to be ineligible and therefore for this state, the lottery was done again and you are now the candidate," The man who dealt with the selected's preparation sighed deeply, obviously annoyed at having to repeat the same answer over and over again. I still couldn't believe my luck but where was Mackenzie now? What had made her ineligible?
"Why was she inelegible? Is it because she was a six?"
The man sighed deeply and I thought he was going to bang his head on the table out of frustration! "All of this will be explained on tonights report but currently we have a lot of work to do. We have to fit a whole week of preparation into a single night. Your doctor will be coming over soon to work out all your medical details and a few other aspects. For now we must make sure that all your information is correct. The height, weight and appearence seems to be in order as well as contact details. Parler vous français?"
"Oui, je parle au français mais je suis Íllea," I answered without thinking.
"Good, good," He shuffled through his papers making everything neat. The doorbell rang and the man got up going to answer it before coming back with my doctor, Dr Reynolds. She was a nice woman but I'd never had to see her much as I was rarely ill.
"Hello my dear," she said kindly, " How are you doing?"
"I'm fine, just a bit confused," I replied smiling.
"That's great. You look ti be in perfect health so I'll just tell this nice young man about your medical history," She turned to the man who was scribbling everything down on to another form. "Deira is rarely ill and has one allergy. She has a serious allergy to strawberries and must never eat one as it will cause her to be seriously ill,"
"Okay, that all seems to be in order so we now must ask one final question, are you a virgin?"
"WHAT?" My mother exclaimed, appalled.
"Of course I am! It's the law!" I said completely outraged.
"That hasn't stopped people before but according to this," he held up a tiny object which could only be the most advanced lie detector, only available to the royal family, "You are telling the truth. Somebody be here for you tomorrow to take you to your farewell gathering. Be on time and in your selected uniform." With that final word, he left.

A couple of hours later mom and I were sat in front of the T.V. tensly awaiting the beginning of the report.
I was just sitting there tapping my foot waiting for a moment that would change my life forever to appear on every screen in the entire country. I had wondered whether this was just some sick joke someone had pulled to add to my torture. Maybe Mackenzie was behind it, I hadn't seen her since this morning and that was what, 16 hours ago. I was just sitting there with this stream of thoughts when I saw louise pass by the open door.
"Louise, come sit with us!" I called out, desperate for something to distract me.
"No thank you miss, I've got lots of work to do," she hurried along practically running away from us.
"Louise?" She had never tried to avoid us before and she knew that we thought of her as family and wouldn't mind if she hadn't finished her work. I left the room and chased after her.
"Louise! Wait!" She finally stopped outside of Mackenzie's bedroom.
"What Miss Deira!" She snapped at me so suddenly I jumped backwards slightly.
"I...I was just wondering what was wrong?" I was scared to speak. Louise looked like she wanted to murder me.
"Nothing is wrong!" She spun around and started to storm off but I had put my hand on her shoulder to stop her.
She grabbed my hand and threw it towards the floor.
"Do not touch me! Do not even think about it after what you did!" She was so angry it would make a soldier cry for mercy.
"What have I done?" I asked tentatively, "I don't know what you're talking about!"
"You don't know!," she laughed at me. "My ass you don't know! If it weren't for you my little Mackenzie would still be here! If you weren't so sad and depressed about a boy that you have never even met!" She stormed away again but this time I didn't stop her. I just stood there, scared and confused and alone. I just stood there before I went back down stairs and prentended like nothing had happened.Sorry I didn't update last week but there were exams and all that shiz and I know this chapter is shorter than normal but I'm saving what happened to Mackenzie for the next chapter because I'm evil like that ;)
