Dear Manelli,

I congratulate you for arranging everything according to my wishes and instructions. I have little doubt now that the production itself will be worthy of my music.

There has been a small change in my plans, however. As I will be unable to return to Venice earlier, I would ask that you move the premiere date to 21st December.

I remain your obedient servant,
E. D.

Dear Mr. Dessler,

I am afraid that such long delay will be too expensive and might interfere with our lead soprano's personal plans, thus causing her to abandon production. We could, of course, look for a different soprano, but as I recall, you insisted on casting Miss Daae. Since I am happy to say that she sings the role beautifully, I would hate to replace her.

Sincerely,
Cesare Manelli

Dear Mr. Dessler,

As our translator has managed to fall asleep drunk while working, and to make matters worse, spill red wine all over his papers, we are now set back a couple of weeks. Miss Daae will accommodate us and will remain with the production until the end of the year.

You will be pleased to learn that, while the premiere is set for early December, I have scheduled a special gala night on 21st December to honor your visit. The performance will begin at 8 o'clock in the evening, and will be followed by a Christmas-themed ball.

Sincerely,
Cesare Manelli

Dear Manelli,

As much as I would still prefer a later premiere, I suppose that this will have to suffice.

Have one of your finest boxes left empty for my use on the 21st, and feel free to contact me should you need advice on how my opera is to be performed.

Your obedient servant,
E. D.
