Burning.

5 1 1

I pressed my tongue to the roof of my mouth

And remembered the burn from the coffee I drank that morning

And I compared it to the burning at the back of my throat from my twelfth cigarette that day that I held in my hand at midnight

And the burn in my chest as the vodka that I washed it down with made it's way to my failing liver.

But it also reminded me of how your words burned into my mind when you left me,

And how it burned my heart to know you were never coming back.
