I felt my phone buzzing in my pocket and pulled it out. I answered and put the phone up to my ear, wandering why my mum was calling me.

    "Hello, Mum." I said.

"Hello darling." She sounded like she had been crying. What was wrong with her?

"What's wrong? What happened?" I asked. I was worried about her, she almost never cries.

"Y-your father," she began to speak but she stared sobbing into the phone.

"What happened to him?" My voice was starting to become hoarse. My heart was beating out of my chest and I was starting to sweat, despite it being January.

"He...he's at the hospital. The doctors don't know what's wrong." I froze.

"Why is he in the hospital?" I was whispering at this point.

"He was walking down the stairs at home and he passed out. He's been unconscious for 2 days." I couldn't say anything. I stood there, tears in my eyes. This couldn't be happening. This isn't real. It can't be.

"Ok, thanks for telling me. I love you." I hung up the phone and shoved it back into my pocket. I kept walking. I needed to get back to the flat before I break down and start sobbing in the middle of town.

I called Phil and told him I was coming home. "What's wrong, Dan? Why are you crying." He asked, sounding concerned.

"I'll explain later when I get back to the flat. I'll be home in about 15 minutes."

"Ok, see you soon." His voice was quiet.

--15 minutes later--

I knocked on the door to our flat and was greeted with a very tired looking Phil. He was holding a piece of pizza and had on his glasses. I never told him this, but I loved it when he wore them. They made him look sophisticated and kind of sexy. I've liked Phil for a long time now, but I've been too afraid to tell him. I'm scared that he won't like me back and it will end our friendship.

I stepped in and walked over to the kitchen to grab a slice of pizza. Phil went over and sat on the couch motioning for me to join him.

"So what's up?" He asked me.

"My mum called. She said t-that..." I started crying. Phil wrapped his arm around me and I buried my face into his shoulder.

"Shhhh. What did she say?" His voice was deep and soothing.

"S-she said that... My dad.. He-he's in the hospital. He passed out a-and he's been i-in a coma for 2 days. The d-doctors don't know what's w-wrong with him." I stuttered. I put my head on Phil's shoulder as he wrapped me up in a tight hug.

We stayed like that for a while, not saying a word. The only sound you could hear was my quiet sobs.

Eventually we both got tired and fell asleep, with Phil's arms still around me.
