I've Always Wondered

I've always wondered

how did you feel

when you broke her heart?

How did she feel

When she realized

that in your life, she never had a part?

Did it take Herculean strength

To say the words

To force them out?

Did she hold her hands to her chest?

Close her eyes

Shake her head, in doubt

Or did the words flow out smoothly

Like the water in that river

Near the place that you two had your first date?

Where later, you unbuttoned her shirt

And I watched as your belt dropped to the ground

Where you became one, I remember, though it was dark and late.

Though I guess,

the joining that I saw

never really stuck.

As of course she's out there,

missing you, I'm sure

Cursing her luck.

And I chuckle as I watch

your pathetic lives,

little people, so human.

And I move to the next.

A new pair of people

the same as you, so human.
