Let's say your character lives on a beach. You can't make the beach turn into a mall. Remember your settings and areas, and make sure not to mix up terrain.
Bad example: Maysie lived right across from the beach. *five chapters later* Maysie called Val up on the phone and asked if she wanted to go to the mall right infront of her house.
Good example: Maysie lived right across from the beach. *five chapters later* Maysie called up Val on the phone and asked if she wanted to go to the mall, about three blocks down.
Bad example: The rocky and dangerous terrain of New York proved a challenge to explorer Hank.
Good example: The rocky and dangerous terrain of Alaska proved a challenge to the explorer Hank.
