Chapter 5

Kailani

I was really worried about today. I was excited at first, but now I was worried.

After school, I was at my locker putting my stuff away when Heath walked up to me with a solemn look. "What's wrong?" I asked.

Heath sighed. "I know we made plans a while ago to hang out today, but my coach scheduled a soccer practice today at six. I'm sorry."

"Oh," I said, frowning a bit.

"I'm really sorry," he said before taking his bag off of his shoulder and pulling a small box out. "I hope this will make up for it."

I gave him a small smile. "Thank you for the present, and it's not your fault you can't hang out today. I know how important soccer is to you and you're the team captain." I took the wrapper off of the box, smiling even wider. "Belgian chocolate. You got me Belgian chocolate? How?"

"My parents were in Belgium last week, remember?" he said. "I knew your birthday was coming up, so I made them get some."

I hugged Heath. "Thank you for the chocolates. I heard about them and apparently, it's really good."

"It is," he said. "By the way, there might be one missing."

"Wow, only one?" I asked. "I thought you would have eaten half the box."

"It took a lot of willpower," Heath said. "I actually had to get my mom to wrap it for me, then hide it and give it to me today."

"Smart," I said, putting the box in my bag and crumpling up the wrapping paper before throwing it in a nearby garbage can. "Your first soccer game is Monday, right?" Heath nodded. "Okay, I'll make sure I'm there. Good luck at practice today."

"Thank you," he said. "I really am sorry."

"Heath, really, it's fine," I said. "At least you made an effort."

Heath raised an eyebrow. "Lincoln still hasn't said anything?"

I sighed and shook my head. Every single year on my birthday, Lincoln was always the first to wish me a happy birthday, usually by waking me up himself or waiting until I got up. He hasn't said anything at all.

Lincoln normally even gave me a birthday present right in the morning. He didn't do that as well.

"Wow," Heath said. "That's a first. And I know he's not planning anything to surprise you because he would have told me otherwise."

"Are you just saying that so I wouldn't think he is?" I asked.

Heath shook his head. "No, I'm serious. He hasn't told me about anything. And I'm certain he's actually going out with Wendy tonight."

Well, that certainly deflated my mood.

"I can talk some sense into him for you," Heath said.

"Don't bother," I said. "If he actually forgot my birthday, then that's his problem. I'm going to head home now."

Heath gave me a sympathetic smile. "If he actually did forget, feel free to slap him twice. One from you, and one from me."

"Trust me, I will," I said before closing my locker. "Once again, good luck at your soccer practice." I began walking to the front doors of the school where Lincoln was waiting for me. Well, I thought he was. He was standing with Wendy and when I asked if he was ready to head home, he told me he and Wendy were going to hang out after school for a bit before going out for dinner.

He actually forgot my birthday. After seventeen years living together, he forgot it.

I had nobody to spend the day with. Heath was at soccer practice, Lincoln forgot and was out with Wendy and Wendy hasn't known me long enough to know my birthday, and Lincoln's dad was working at his resort.

When I got home, I sat on the couch and watched a movie, part of me hoping that Lincoln would remember my birthday and come home. I would even be fine with him bringing Wendy over as well because I did consider her sort of my friend.

I watched two movies by myself before getting up to get a drink of water. I turned on the sink in the kitchen before grabbing a glass from the cupboard beside the sink. Right as I put the glass under the water to fill it up, the water moved away.

The water moved away, not the tap. It was if it had a mind on its own and didn't want to get into the cup.

I moved the glass the where it was now, trying to fill it up, but it moved away again. I kept doing that until I gave up and slammed the glass onto the counter, turning off the tap before going into the fridge and pouring myself a glass of milk instead. That didn't move away from me.

I then decided to go for a swim, not in the pool, but in the ocean. Besides, this house was right on the beach so I could always got to the shore behind the house whenever I wanted.

I went to my room and got changed into my swimsuit before grabbing a towel and heading off to the shore. People were rarely in this area of the beach, especially in February. I mean, it wasn't exactly hot this time of year, but it wasn't cold either. For me, it was a perfect temperature to be outside.

I placed my towel onto the sand before walking towards the water. I stood near it for a bit, breathing in the fresh smell of the beach; the water, the seaweed. I loved this smell. It always calmed me. Everything having to do with water calmed me.

After a few moments of taking in the fresh air, I started walking into the water. When my foot was about to step into the water, it moved back. I furrowed my eyebrows, taking another step by having the water doing the exact same thing.

I huffed, taking a few more steps, only to have the water keep moving back. What was going on here? I just wanted to go into the water and it was moving away from me.

I sighed, trying once more before groaning and going to my towel. I picked it up and head back to the house, going through the gate in the back. The first thing I noticed was the pool and I stared at it for a bit before dropping my towel on one of the lounge chairs and walking to the stairs of the pool.

Like I predicted, the water moved away when I placed my foot on the first step. I went on the second step and it still moved away. I had no idea what was going on, but I didn't like it at all. I just wanted to go swimming.

I got off the steps and brought the towel inside before heading to my bedroom. While I was getting changed into my pajamas, I noticed a mark on my upper arm near my shoulder. I went to my washroom, getting a better look of it in the mirror.

The mark looked like a half moon with three water waves inside of it.

I was even more confused.

What.

Was.

Happening?

So this book might be my main focus right now. cx I'll probably update at least two chapters per day because there's a chapter I really want to get to.

Chapter 20. It's so far away, but on the bright side, I have the basics of every single chapter planned out before then.

And I can't wait for Simon to actually meet the other three. He gets along fine with them.

Well, two of them.cx
