Chapter 30
Lincoln
During lunch time at school, I was feeling a bit sick. I just couldn't concentrate in school and my stomach kept churning.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Kailani asked as we sat down at our normal table. "You look pale."
"I'm fine," I said. "It's just a stomach flu."
"I know that," Kailani said. "But you shouldn't be here if it is one. Home isn't too far way. You can just walked there and tell your dad to call the school because you're not feeling well."
I sighed and rested my head on the table. "I'm fine, Kail. I'll just rest during lunch and I can handle the rest of the day."
"Lincoln, if this is about Hall...." she began.
"It's not," I said as I looked up at her.
Kailani raised an eyebrow. "Really? Because ever since we thought about Hall being part of the dark side, you refuse to leave my side. You even stand outside of the washroom when I'm having a shower, which is kind of creepy, by the way."
I rubbed my forehead. "I know, I know. I'm just....Worried. Paranoid. I have a feeling that he's not going to stop until he has you and Simon. He's not going to stop until he has all of us."
"I get that," Kailani said. "And I'm worried too, but you need to head home if you're feeling sick."
"I promise, I'm...." I stopped when I had the urge to sneeze come. I covered my mouth and nose with the inside of my elbow and sneezed. Right as I did, the ground vibrated for about five seconds, then it stopped.
Kailani sighed as Heath, Simon, and Wendy walked over. "Alright, who's making you jealous now, Lincoln?" Heath asked.
"Nobody," I said.
"He's just feeling sick, but he's refusing to go home because he's worried about Hall," Kailani said. "He doesn't want to leave me alone."
"Lincoln, seriously, go home," Heath said. "I promise if Hall comes here, I'll blast him in the face with fire."
"That won't really help," I said.
"I know it won't, but he's not going to randomly come to the school, where a lot of adults are, and kidnap us," Heath said. "You have nothing to worry about."
"Heath is right," Kailani said. "I promise I'll head straight home after school with Simon so you have nothing to worry about."
"Fine," I muttered. "But I swear, if he goes anywhere near you...."
"He won't," Kailani said. "I would kiss your cheek, but you have the stomach flu, so not happening."
"Fair enough," I said, standing up from the table. I hang my backpack over my shoulder. "I'll see you after school."
I left the school and began walking home. I didn't really want to leave Kailani, but she wasn't going to be alone and Heath was right. Hall wouldn't walk into the school and take Simon and Kailani.
While I was walking home, I felt a presence behind me. I tried shaking it off, but I couldn't, so I turned around and saw Hall there. I just stared at him for a bit and he approached me. "So, Lincoln, is it?" he asked.
"Yeah?" I said. "Can I help you?"
"It's about Kailani and Simon," Hall said. "I know they don't want to leave your home, but if anyone could convince them to, it would be you."
"Why would I want to convince them to leave?" I asked.
"If you truly care about them, especially Kailani, then you would," Hall said. "I hired a private investigator to find their father, and he was able to do it."
"Really?" I asked. "That's amazing."
Hall nodded. "I know how much Simon really wanted to meet him, so it must be the same for Kailani. I know Simon doesn't like me too much and probably won't believe me, so I really need you to tell them about it."
"I don't know...." I said. "Can't their dad just come down here to see them? I don't really want Kailani, or even Simon, to leave. Kailani and I have been best friends all our life and I love her more than anything, more than anyone."
"I understand," he said. "But if you truly loved her, you would want for her to see her dad."
I didn't answer. I did want Kailani to see her dad, but at the same time, I didn't want her to leave.
"Like I asked before, can't their dad just come here?" I asked.
"He isn't in the best situation right now," Hall said. "He doesn't have enough money to come down here. Look, I told Harris about their dad, so just tell them that Harris got a call from their dad, Joseph, that he found out about them. I know the twins wouldn't trust it if I told them I hired a private investigator."
"Yeah, I guess I'll tell them," I said in a quiet voice. I didn't want Kailani to leave.
"Thank you," Hall said. "They're really going to love meeting their dad. I'll get Harris to sort everything out to take them there."
"Okay," I said. "I'll tell them when they get home from school. Thanks for finding their dad."
As I turned around to walk away, I realized what kind of idiot I was trusting him like that. First off, Hall would never hire a private investigator to find a foster kid's parents. I mean, he really didn't seem like that type of guy.
Second, I knew Kailani and Simon's dad's name from their birth certificate and it sure as hell wasn't Joseph.
I turned around and saw Hall walking away. "Hall?" I said. He turned around to face me. "I change my mind. I'm not going to tell them. You are."
"I told you, they won't trust me if I tell them," Hall said.
"I know, but what kind of person would I be not to let you get the credit of finding their dad?" I asked. "What was his name again? Joseph?"
Hall nodded. "That's correct."
"Yeah, funny thing, but Simon actually has their birth certificates," I said. "Remember, he met his mom before she passed away and she gave it to them. Joseph isn't their father's name."
"Really?" Hall asked. "I'll have to talk to the private investigator. He obviously found the wrong person."
Right.
"Okay, well, thanks for trying to find their dad," I said. "Keep me posted."
Or not.
