Chapter 26:

"That's Marcus." Caleb uttered the words with nothing but anger, pain, revulsion and even a little fright laced in his croaky voice.

The words would've immobilised Lexi even if she were not tied to a chair, the true wickedness of the situation suddenly dawning upon her as her features go from a mixture of fear to anger and finally sorrow.

Re scoffs. "Who the hell is Marcus? And why is this relevant when we're sitting here, tied up and probably about to die." She says angrily shaking her arms behind her in attempt to release herself but giving up just as quickly.

Meanwhile, Lexi is unable to form words behind Caleb and he turns his head a little to face her to see if he could figure out why she had gone so quiet all of a sudden. But again, it was a feeble attempt because he couldn't see her face.

"Well? Are you going to tell us who Marcus is or not? Because I'm pretty sure that was Dr Riverfield, you know the founder of Riverfield Sanatorium. Insane asylum. Ring any bells? The place that you basically called home for 4 month-"

"Will you shut the fuck up!" Caleb growls at Re, cutting her off and slightly scaring her with the loud tone of voice that he uses. He calms himself down when he realises that simply talking makes the pain in his leg worse and looks down to the floor as silence consumes them all.

Re shuts her mouth because she's pretty sure that Caleb would still kill her if he somehow got out of his binds. Lexi's still speechless from the revelation and suddenly, everything is crystal clear in the whirlwind of a mess that was inside her head. She finally gets it all.

The poisoning. The torturing. The kidnapping. This whole mess is a personal vendetta against Caleb. Lexi and Re just happened to get caught up in the middle of it.

Lexi begins questioning every word, action and thought since the day that she had met Caleb and thoroughly examines it all in that tiny little had of hers in order to try and comprehend the truth to all of this.

"I thought he was in England." Lexi seethes, with a new found hatred for the man that had them tied to a chair. "I..wait- I thought he was a teacher."

"So did I." Caleb says after a long while of silence.

His reluctance to add to the topic is clear to Lexi because of Re's presence.

Lexi turns to see Re looking at her with furrowed eyebrows as if in utter confusion and Lexi doesn't bother to fill her in when she's too busy asking Caleb questions that she itches to know. "He still hates you for what you did...all those years ago?" Lexi whispers as if it'd stop Re from hearing her words.

But the room for so silent, the drop of a pin could be heard. And the silence lingers even more so when Caleb fails to answer, instead his breathing harshens.

"Caleb?" She calls out, turning her head to look over her shoulder. Upon doing so, his head dips down and he starts breathing even louder. "Are you okay?"

He sighs loudly in exasperation and with gritted teeth and a clenched jaw, he replied with: "I have a knife jammed and twisted in the flesh of my thigh. What do you think, Alexa?" He struggles to barely ask, sarcastically, voice low.

She can't bring herself to be pissed off with his sarcasm as the overwhelming sense of worry washes over her and she's grabbing his hand again, attempting to soothe his pain by gently rubbing her thumb across his hand.

She's not so surprised when he doesn't pull his hand back, instead the silence consumes the three of them again.

It sound completely crazy, but she's glad Caleb is here with them. She's be much more worried if he wasn't. She's also glad they're placed in the positions they're in at the moment because it prevents Re from witnessing and questioning the both of them about why they're holding hands when they certainly do not need to.
