I could feel someones gaze on the back if my neck and turned around to see the one and only Sodapop Curtis staring at me. I looked at Sodapop with a grin set on my face and sent a small wave in his direction. He glared at me slightly before putting his attention back on his friends. I rolled my eyes and continued to speak with my friends.
"Why does he hate you so much?" My best friend laughed. Ever since our freshman year of high school he has had a strong disliking for me.
"I don't know." I ranted. "But it really bothers me because I'm a really nice and likeable person!"
"You should go over there and ask him why." She giggled. I knew that she was teasing me because I probably wouldn't be able to do it. I've never been one to confront people. I stared at her in annoyance and then did something that I knew would shock her.
"Fine." I told her while standing up. "I will." I didn't look back to see her reaction but continued to the table only a few feet away from ours. I caught the attention of Two-Bit Matthews and he pointed out to Soda that I was coming over. Sodapops face immediately reddened and he tried to avoid eye contact. As soon as I got to the table I started to speak, not wanting to let me convince myself not to do it. "Why don't you like me?" I asked him, getting straight to the point. Two-Bit and Steve, who was also sitting at the table excused themselves.
"What do you mean?" Soda asked, blush still prominent on his cheeks.
"No matter how nice I am you always glare at me or just give distant and cold answers when we talk." I ranted. "Why?"
"Look, (Y/n)." He stuttered.
"Just tell me why?" I spoke calmly. "That's all I wanna know." He stared at me without opening his mouth to respond even once. I shook my head and turned to walk away but was stopped by his hand grabbing my wrist.
"I do like you! You're just so nice and caring that I feel it's impossible for one person to be that nice, especially when they live the life that you do! You've been abused and neglected but you still put everyone before you." He confessed, the words leaving his mouth quickly. "I may even like you a little too much but I know that you could do so much better than me!" I stared at him in awe and didn't know what to say. No one has ever said something like this to me before and I was kind of in shock. "Please say something."
"Why didn't you just tell me that in the first place?" I asked with a breathy laugh. I let him pull me into a hug and couldn't help the tears that left my eyes as I had processed what he had said.
"I was waiting until.you needed to hear it." He whispered into my hear. I laughed once more and hesitantly pulled myself away from him.
"Thank you." I told him with all sincerity. He nodded with a small smile on his face and wiped away the remaining tears.
"How about you let me make this up to you by taking you out for dinner sometime soon?" He asked with a playful wink. I felt myself blush and grabbed a napkin to give him my number on.
"I would love that." I told him while handing him the inked napkin. He gave his iconic charming smile as he grabbed it from my hand. I heard his friends behind us whistle loudly and felt my face go even redder.
"I can't wait." He said sa I walked back towards my best friend.
"Me either." I responded and sat down in front of my friend. I couldn't help the laughter that escaped my mouth as I turned to see her with a look of disbelief and her mouth hanging open. "If you keep your mouth open like that you're gonna catch flies."
"If should've known you had it in you." A smirk was etched on her face and we continued to eat as we spoke in excitement about my upcoming date.
