Laughter

I sit across from you
As a joke escapes your mouth,
One that I know was meant to be funny,
Meant to be light, and yet, somehow,
It transports us into a film of memories,
Each one a different shade
Of the same color.
I remember your face,
As it was lit by a fire as bright as the sun
On a beautiful fall day,
And I can still see the rain,
Like the tears of a newborn baby,
Dimming the flames,
Until there is no more water left to fall,
And yet the heat, the red and the orange,
Still remain,
And the glow is just enough
For me to recognize the smile in your eyes.
