We pull up to the front of the school and Jake pulls me out of the car with him. Billie stops us and says, "Jake, keep an eye on her and let her hang out with you for the first day. Make sure to show her where her classes are, okay?" he asks, even though he wasn't going to take no for an answer anyways. Jake nods and smiles. "I love you, guys," Billie says happily and we reply, "Love you too. Bye." He drives off and we walk into the school gates. "Me and my friends hang out by the gym, but if you wanna hang out with Andy, I think he hangs out next to the cafeteria. But, let me show you where your classes are first," Jake says confidently. I nod and follow him around the campus as we look for my classrooms.
*
"Welp, that's all of them," he says, teetering back and forth on his heels. "Okay," I say quietly. "Look, I know it sucks, being the new kid and all, but it's gonna be fine. I promise. And you have my number on your phone, so text me or Joey whenever for whatever, got it?" he comforts me. I nod and follow him as he guides me to his group of friends. There's far too many to name them all but his two closest friends are Enzo and Chris, who are in Jake's band, Danger!. I stand quietly by Jake's side and listen to their conversation about the band and music. My phone buzzes because of a text from Andy.Andy: where r u??
Me: with Jake next to the gym...u can come over here if u want
Andy: k I'll be there in a secI whisper to Jake, "Is it okay if Andy comes over here?" Jake nods and continues talking with his friends. Andy soon shows up and everyone says quick hello's to him. "Let me see your schedule so I can see if we have any classes together," Andy says as I hand it to him. "Yes! We have chem, math, and English together," he says happily. I smile and put my schedule back into my bag. Suddenly, a loud siren sounds over the speakers and the lady on the other side says, "Students, we are on lockdown. Please make your way to the nearest classroom and turn your phones off. I repeat, this is a lockdown and you need to get into the closest classroom." Jake grabs my hand and pulls me with him to a classroom. Jake's friends and Andy trail behind us and we quickly go to the back of the classroom and crouch down. The teacher locks the door, closes the blinds, and turns off the lights. Once we sit down low to the ground, I whisper frantically to Jake, "What's happening? What do we do? What's going on?" "It'll be okay. It's probably just a drill or something," he says comfortingly. The teacher looks at us and says, "Look, we all need to stay quiet. Send a quick text to your parents and turn off your phones." I pull out my phone and quickly send a text to Adie.
Me: the school is on lockdown, but Jake says it's just a drill but I don't even know what that means. I'm with Jake, Andy, Enzo, Chris, and Jake's other friends. I don't know what's happening but I'm scared. I have to turn off my phone so I can't text u anymore. I love you
And with that, I shut off my phone and get a pit in my stomach. A bunch of questions run through my head and then I realize, where's Joey? I begin to panic more than ever and look at Andy, who is still texting someone. Once he's done, he turns off his phone and stuffs it into his pocket. I overhear Jake and his friends, and I really wish I could un-hear what they just said. Someone brought a gun to school. My heartbeat quickens and I'm having trouble breathing. "Are you okay?" Andy whispers to me. I shake my head and tears begin to fall down my cheeks. He loosely places his arm over my shoulders in an attempt to calm me down. I keep my crying quiet and cry into Andy's chest. Jake soon crawls over to us and comforts me as well. Andy hands me over to Jake because he's technically my brother, and Jake holds onto me. I feel slightly comforted, but I'm still having trouble breathing. "It's going to be fine, I promise," Jake coos. "Just think of nice things, like rainbows and unicorns and butterflies," Andy says, a light giggle in his voice, which causes me to calm down a bit and laugh slightly.
"Jake, I wanna go home. I'm scared. It's going to happen again. I'm going to lose more people," I say quietly and weakly. I take an almost silent shaky breath in and look at the door intently. Out of nowhere, Jake hands me a pair of headphones plugged into his phone. "Jake, we have to keep are phones off," I whisper sternly. "Shhh! Just listen to the music; it should calm you down," he shoots back. I do as he says and began to calm down when a soft song begins to play. Then, I realize it's Green Day, which makes me smile a lot when I hear Billie's comforting voice. I'm so used to his voice that it reminds me of home, which is soothing.
"Another turning point, a fork stuck in the road. Time grabs you by the wrist and directs you where to go. So make the best of this test and don't ask why. It's not a question, but a lesson learned in time. It's something unpredictable, but in the end is right. I hope you have the time of your life," the music plays softly. I close my eyes and listen closely as other songs play through. My breathing finally settles down to a repetitive pace. Jake pulls the headphones out of my ears and I look at him, cocking an eyebrow. "It's all over. They arrested him, but the lockdown is still going on, so just stay quiet," he says. I give him his phone and headphones back and Andy is still texting someone. "Is it your mom?" I whisper to him. He looks up from his phone and shakes his head, "No, it's actually my girlfriend." "Oh. I had no idea," I say calmly.
Sure, maybe I had feelings for him in a different way, but he's my friend; I'm going to be happy for him. "I hope I didn't give you the wrong idea," he apologizes sincerely. "It's fine. I'm really happy for you," I tell him happily. I glance over at Jake and see him talking to his friends calmly. Since he's calm, I calm down myself. "All clear. All clear. The lockdown is over," the overhead speaker sounds. I pull out my phone and turn it back on, only to see over 50 texts sent to me.
Adie: I'm coming to pick u, Jake, and Joey up right now. Everything's going to be okay. I promise.
Billie: Adie told me what happened. Stay calm and we're on our way to pick u up, ok?
Joey: idk where u and Jake are but don't worry about me. I'm safe in a classroom and we'll meet up afterwards.
Mike: billie told me what's going on. Everything's gonna be alright. We won't let anything happen to u
Tré: KICK THE SHOOTER'S ASS CHELSEA
I laugh at Tré's comment and look at the rest of the heartfelt texts. Most of them were from Adie, telling me to stay calm. "Okay, everyone, if any of you have siblings, feel free to go make sure they're okay. And if you're parents are here to pick you up, go find them in the front of the school," the teacher says, standing up. Jake and I wave goodbye to our friends and leave the class to find Joey. Everyone crowds all over the school in order to find their siblings. I see other students hugging and crying to each other, which makes me worry about Joey and where he is. Suddenly, someone runs up behind Jake and I and hugs us tightly. It's Billie.
My eyes were still red from my panic attack and Billie seems to notice. "Were you crying?" he asks softly. "No...I just yawned and sneezed at the same time and my eyes watered," I lie, which causes him to laugh since he knows it's a lie. "Where's Joey?" he asks, looking around. "I don't know...he said we were going to meet up after the drill," Jake says. Adie, Mike, and Tré meet up with us and hug us tightly. Eventually, Joey shows up with a nervous expression, but he plays it off like he's okay. We all hugged him and he says, "He was right outside of the classroom I was in." Adie hugs him tightly again with a warm, relieved smile. "Are you all okay?" Mike finally asks us. Jake and Joey both nod, which makes everyone's eyes go to me. "I'm fine, it's just a gun," I manage to choke out. Tré's demeanor of happy quickly dies down and becomes a serious feeling. I quickly notice that I'm caught in a lie. Of course I'm not okay. I'm terrified. "We'll talk when we get home, okay," Billie whispers to me, guiding all of us to the car. Oh, how I love talking about my feelings...
