CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE: Dragon

It was coming.

The dragon couldn't stop it.

With the ache came the pain and with the pain came something new yet familiar.

The dragon snarled, twisting and curling around itself in an attempt to prevent what was coming, but its movements were in vain. It was futile to fight something that had always won in the end, bowing only when it was too tired to hold power over the dragon anymore. It wasn't so much as a struggle as it was a waiting game.

The dragon's vision weakened, unable to see the outline of the forest outside of its cave. It grew dimmer and less sharp as its body screamed in agony. The dragon cried out, continuing to snarl at something it could never see. Its shout startled wildlife from the trees and near the forest line, chasing them further in the thick patch of trees.

Noise was a constant in the dragon's cave into the wee hours of the coming morning.

When the dawn of the morning sun shed its bright, wondrous light upon the country of Loress, sound ceased to be made in the cave.

There was only silence and a stillness in the air.
