you always hear that the

new year is a time

to prepare for the future.

to be ready for new

experiences and

chances.

everyone's excited to make

new memories,

while I only want to wallow

in my old ones.

because she is in those ones.

I can think back to her

jokes

and our dates.

the night we went to the drive in

and she hid her friends

in the trunk.

the night we met,

when she was only seventeen

and I had just graduated.

I wanted to think back

to old new starts,

because if I thought of the ones

ahead, she wouldn't be in them.

and I didn't want to think about a world

that no longer had her in it.
