Chapter 12
Chloe awoke the next morning to a knock on her door. Getting out of bed she walked over and opened the door to find a smiling Kat standing there with a tray of food.
“Morning!” She said cheerfully. “Mason asked me to bring you some breakfast and to tell you that he’ll meet you in his office when you’re ready.”
Chloe couldn’t help but smile at the young girl. “Thank you.” She said as she took the tray of food and went to sit down on her bed.
Picking up her fork Chloe couldn’t decide what she wanted to eat first. There was sausage, home fries and scrambled eggs all heaped together on her plate. They all looked and smelled amazing too.
Chloe had become so engrossed with her food that she hadn’t noticed that Kat was still standing at her opened door until Kat cleared her throat and spoke.
“I’m sorry but can I ask you a question?” Kat asked.
“Of course.” Chloe asked taking a mouth full of eggs.
“How can you just not use your ability?”
Chloe put her fork down slowly and looked at the young girl. “I don’t know. I guess I’m scared of it. Haven’t you ever been afraid of what you can do?”
Kat seemed to think for a moment before shaking her head. “Can’t say that I have. I grew up being able to change. I don’t remember the first time I used my ability and I don’t have anyone who can remember for me. My parent’s left me or the streets when I was very young.”
Chloe was shocked. “How did you survive?”
Kat just shrugged. “I spent a lot of the time as a cat and cat’s mature faster than humans. So I guess I just hunted and fed as a cat mostly. Irene found me when I was about six years old. She brought me here and between her and Mason I learned how to be human. There are days when I wish I could just stay a cat again.”
“What keeps you from doing just that?”
“I’d miss the friends I have made and the fact that I was born a human first.” Kat said with a small smite. “Anyways, I should let you eat. Mason’s office is down this hall, then turn left and then a right.”
Chloe watched Kat walk away with a small sigh. She hadn’t got the answer she was looking for but perhaps it was an answer she had to find for herself?
After eating and a quick wash up, Chloe set out for Mason’s office. It wasn’t long before Chloe was hopelessly lost. She hadn’t even seen anyone that she could ask for directions.
Taking a look around Chloe couldn’t even remember how she got there. Maybe, just this once, she could use her ability? It wouldn’t be harming anyone since she’d just be looking at the picture in her head.
With a deep breath in, Chloe closed her eyes and found herself looking at the floor plan. She could see people in the rooms around her. For a second she considered just knocking on a door and asking for directions but what was the point?
With another deep breath in she focused on finding Mason. It took a few tries but she was finally able to locate him in her mind map. What shocked Chloe was that she was on the opposite side of the school from him and heading in the wrong direction.
