When you are writing you need to figure out who you are talking to, your audience, the main idea of your work, the topic, and the whole reason for doing it, your purpose.

Audience - WHO

This can be anyone, any age group, gender, race, or even social class. If you are planning on taking part in young adult literature would you use very complex words, or would you use semi-complex words? For example, the main word is happy, which would be more appropriate for young adults, buoyant or pleased?

Topic - WHAT

When writing a topic is what you are writing about, it also contributes to if your work is persuasive, informative, or entertaining. The topic can range from the heritage of elven lore, to how to cross the street, all depending on what type of writing you are using.

Purpose - WHY

You need to know why you are writing, and just as the topic is tied to PIE, so is the purpose. The purpose is figuring out if you wish to be persuasive, informative, or entertaining.
