This poem is almost a collection of scenes I chose. I think Ariel was so brave for following her heart in search of love and adventure =) On saying that, here I have Ariel yearning less for Derek and more for the surface world.
I've linked a gorgeous piece of music called Theme From the Mermaid Chair (from Secret Garden) over there --> that you might want to listen to on low volume alongside reading this. I would have used something from The Little Mermaid, but none of the music was sufficiently sad and joyous at the same time. Enjoy =)
Part of Your World
Light descends across the water,
Clearest gold, upon the daughter
Of the ocean. Bright-eyed wonder to the west,
Where all-too-soon the sun again will come to rest.
But risen now from sleep unfurled,
Lamenting dreams to be a smallest part of your big world,
She laughs and dances, glides and sings,
Smiles and flees through night and day. This child of kings.
...
Darkest abyss, plunging light,
Tossing waves that shake and roll right through the night.
Their depths embrace and hide and drown,
And keep me ever,
Down,
Down,
Down.
-
Daughter fair of salt and sea,
With kingly pride my father holds too tight to me.
Deep ocean floor which shook and raged,
Beneath eternal want to keep me caged,
Did rise and churn and dance and swirl,
Around this cold and lonely girl,
While he destroyed with wrath of tide,
My sanctuary, far and wide.
-
With heavy soul, and sorrow-laden,
I weep in silence, longing for my broken haven.
Shards and shrouds of memory weak,
Black thoughts entomb the wishes I so greatly seek.
-
Now silver glimmers shimmer through
The morning skies of paling blue,
Upon the calm of darkest ocean,
Swept up high, now, struck in motion,
As the clouds replace the stars
And water thunders over my heart's scars.
-
...Locked and veiled by foam and rain,
Screaming, crying out my pain,
I dare to dream a little higher,
Rising further, on desire...
-
By dreams of sunlight, burning ray,
My heart flames bright to guide my way,
Through choking dark and nightmares' gloom
To meet the witch and sign my doom
For only fickle dreams of need
To quench my want, of strength to make my spirit bleed.
-
Like breaking sea and roaring storm,
The hope in me spreads wings in form
Of building flight of white sea-birds
As my voice rings lamenting words.
-
Drawn from soul and sacred core,
Taunted by the luring echo of the shore,
I sing my last. I suffer choice
With little left. Now gone, my stolen voice.
Strangled by what once was air,
Bleak water glows in daylight's glare
And calls me onwards from the chasm,
Far from home in violent spasm.
-
Ice concealed in gasps for breath
As my head breaks the water and the chains of death.
It's my freedom. Never stop.
I'll go forever,
Up,
Up,
Up
...
Light descends across the water,
Royal bronze, upon the daughter
Of the shores with bright-eyed wonder to the east,
Where burning sunlight is released.
Risen now from sleep unfurled,
Rejoicing dreams to be a smallest part of your big world,
She flies as if her feet were wings,
Smiling wide through night and day. This child of kings.

And do you think Ariel was right or wrong to change herself for Eric? =)
