It depends on your current level of activity. If you're living a sedentary lifestyle, all you really need is 90 to 180 minutes a week. If you want to lose weight fast, you should stay at the higher end of the spectrum. Break your cardio time into short sessions two or three times a week.

For most people, the best cardio options are swimming and bike riding because they're low-impact. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself during a workout. Start off easy and work your way up. 

For you advanced readers, mix it up a little. Try taking a dance class. Use the stair climber AND the treadmill. Adjust the duration, intensity and frequency of your workouts for your individual needs. 

Remember: You can't eat more than usual after a workout. If you do, you undo all the work you've done!
