"You didn't have to do that, you know?" I say,

bells jingling from the cafe door.

She smirks, flipping her pink hair.

"I know you wouldn't have done anything otherwise."

I give her an amused look.

"How come you know me better than myself?"

She chuckles.

"You're just an idiot, Sakai."

"Jeez, you'd be cute if your personality weren't so nasty."

Takanashi jumps away from me comically.

"Can you seriously stop that?"

"Stop what?"

"Stop hitting on me."

"Oh c'mon. We're friends."

She laughs it off, and we're walking side by side again.

Her arm brushes mine.

"...friends, huh."

⌠ 2 ⌡

It feels like a weight has been lifted from my shoulders.

Yura doesn't hate me.

Our misunderstanding is behind us.

Why was it so difficult to talk to each other before?

Our talk by the cafe- natural as could be,

like nothing had happened.

We had created barriers for ourselves,

excuses and lies,

because we were afraid of rejection.

I see it now, how childish the two of us had been.

---

Takanashi walks beside me, humming.

She had done something so ridiculous,

just for the sake of our promise to each other.

I'll be your wingman.

"Hey, Takanashi."

She looks up at me, one eyebrow raised.

"Thanks."

⌠ 3 ⌡

By the time I am home,

the fireflies are visible; a sign of summer.

They hover right beside the window in my room,

all pulsing, glowing a bright light.

Summer meant endless possibilities.

Yet, just like the tiny flashes of light,

ephemeral.

Bzzt.

My smartphone vibrates- a lone message flashing on the screen.

[6:12] T: We need to talk.
