January 12, 2001

That evening, I tried my best not to cry. Because if I did, I'd definitely look uglier.

"Mom, I want to eat egg rolls for dinner," Ailee announced.

"Me too, Mom," I said.

"Okay, sweethearts," she smiled and opened the fridge, only to see that there was only one egg left, enough for one person.

"Oh no, there's only one left," mom looked at me as if she was expecting me to say something.

"I-I don't want it anymore. You can have it, Ailee," I quickly replied with a smile, even though my heart felt heavy.

"Thanks," she smiled back.

and I knew...

"Then I'll prepare some black beans for you to eat, sweetheart! You like them, right?" mom grinned at me with content.

"Yes," I said, even though I hated them.

...that I will have to chew black beans for dinner again that night.
