"Jason, dear. Did you remember to—" Penelope Blossom paused mid-sentence and plastered a smile on her face at the sight of the brunette. "Alexis, what an unexpected pleasure. Jason didn't tell me to expect company."
Lexi rolled her eyes internally at the sour woman glaring at Jason who was stood by the door next to her. What a lovely family the Blossoms were.
"I am sorry to barge in without invitation, Mrs Blossom. I didn't get the chance to complete my english work due to cheerleading practice. Jason was kind enough to offer me some help," Lexi grinned insincerely.
Penelope nodded in understanding, "Well, you should be more aware of time management — why, you can't focus on cheerleading over your grades. Both must be equally spaced out of you want to get anywhere in life. Just look at my son, excellent grades and he's captain of the football team."
"Mother, please—" Jason began before he was quickly cut off by his father walking behind his mother.
"We need to hurry if we want to make it on time before the Coopers get there first and eat all the food like they did last time." Clifford glanced down at his wife before he noticed the Hale girl standing by his son at the door. "Ah, Lexa — is it?"
"Lexi, sir." Lexi corrected with an over exaggerated smile. God, she hated Jason's parents.
"Yes, yes, of course. Did you drive here?" Cliff asked with a narrowed gaze.
Jason answered before the slightly confused brunette could do so herself. "I did, dad."
Cliff nodded and shared a callous smile with his wife. "Good. We wouldn't want Lexi over here driving my son about. Certainly not with those poor driving skills that the Hale's have."
Lexi felt all the colour fade from her face along with her smile as the two redheaded parents chuckled obnoxiously. Her chest constricted as if she had just been punched in the centre of her ribcage which caused her breathing to became hallow. She couldn't help but to notice her facade that she put up was crumbling to the ground, slowly but surely turning to ash at her feet. The feelings she kept locked in a box inside the depths of her mind slowly broke free and with them resurfaced the memories of her parents' death.
Jason glared at his parents before sending a fleeting glance over at Lexi's fallen face. "We better get studying. Goodbye mother, father."
The red haired boy didn't waste another moment before grabbing Lexi's hand and dragging her up the stairs after him. Once they got to his room, Lexi let her body fall into a sitting position on his bed. "I know," she said nonchalantly just as Jason opened his mouth to apologise. "It's not your fault, J."
Jason sighed as he ran a hand through his hair. "I didn't think they'd bring up your parents car accident. I'm sorry."
"Don't be," she fake smiled and stood up. "I'm going to the little ladies room, get me some food while I'm gone, yeah?"
Jason nodded, despite the fact he had saw straight through her tough girl act and followed her out the bedroom door. They separated at the landing where she went left, he went right. Reaching the bathroom, she let her act fade. Her hands gripped the porcelain sink tightly until her knuckles turned white. She tried to calm her breathing taking deep breath to fulfil her lungs needs. Refusing to look up into the mirror, where she would only see the sorrow plastered all over her face, she missed the chance to see a redhead approach the door.
"Little heads up," Lexi looked up into the mirror to see Cheryl staring into her eyes. "Don't take everything they say to heart. If you do, you won't make it out of this house alive."
The brunette couldn't read the look in her eyes, no matter how hard she tried. They were emotionless but she could just manage to see a little something hidden underneath, hoping to never be found. "You heard."
She couldn't form any other words than that. Her mind was a maze right now and it seemed to forget how to operate as her lips rebuked her orders to move and say anything else.
"These walls have ears, Lexi. And I don't mean the ghosts of the dead resting outside in their graves." Cheryl nodded. "I'm sorry about your parents."
The brunette felt herself stiffen at the sound of her name roll off Cheryl's lips and fought against the warm feeling inside her stomach. The feeling of butterflies in her stomach were not welcomed by Lexi, she hated the false spread of hope they brought with them. Like the hope that she'd see her parents again, hope left nothing but a sour taste in the back of her throat.
"Yeah, well it isn't going to bring them back." Lexi shifted her gaze letting her grief envelop her heart and turn it to ice. She looked back up when her mind quickly came to realise that this was Cheryl Blossom she was talking her heart out to — a girl that didn't particularly like Lexi to begin with. "Why are you being nice to me?"
The whisper had just barely reached Cheryl's ears and when they did, they arouse a foreign feeling that she had never felt before. She had never seen Lexi Hale look so weak before. In school she was every bit as much a wicked bitch as she was and to see her with her guard down was a surprise to say the least. "I've been on the receiving end of my parents cruel jokes for a while now. I know how it feels when they tear the happiness from your soul. Kinda reminds me of when you get turned down by the person you like..."
Cheryl's voice had lowered to just above a whisper as she spoke her pain. She didn't know why she was sharing so much with her brother's best friend, she just knew she felt comfortable in her presence at that given moment. The moment where two seemingly strong girls let their walls crumble and show they were just sad, scared, little puppies pretending to be vicious wolves.
Lexi managed to smile, even despite the numbness spreading through her chest. "When has the Cheryl Blossom ever been turned down?"
Cheryl allowed her lips to turn up at the corners, "You'd be surprised how many times I've been shut down by the one person who I actually want to talk to in this awful town."
"And who would that be, Cherry?" Lexi just couldn't help herself and let the nickname roll off her tongue with a small smirk.
"Doesn't matter who. All that matters is love isn't worth it. It makes you weak and allows people to take advantage of that weakness." Cherry covered up her mistake with a strained voice.
"Love allows us to live, cherry." Lexi let her smile fade as she switched her gaze from the redhead back to her own reflection. "It just so happens fate is so cruel as to let it be the death of us at the same time."
