"Get out of here lazy cat!" A man shouted.

"Ah! Mommy!" A boy cried.

"Ew! What is that thing?!" A woman cried.

A grey tabby, ears tucked into his head carefully trod across the street to an apartment block where he stayed. It wasn't much, but it was home. There was plenty of garbage to eat and it sheltered from wind and rain. A box with old clothes was neatly arranged by him formed a bedding. He limped into his little box and meowed in pain.

He licked his broken foot and stared at it with his one eye. His foot's unnatural angle interfered in his position. He tossed and turned, looking for a comfortable position to rest and sighed. The sores spreading across his head and shoulders itched and irritated till his last moments of consciousness. Finally, he fell asleep in the cold night winds.

...

"Mommy! It's a cat! Can I touch it?" A small girl asked. The girl, followed by her mother walked out the door, opening to Tabby and his little box.

"No!" The mother exclaimed. She grabbed her daughter's wrist and yanked her away. "That cat is sick, you should never touch or go near these cats" The mother warned.

"But if it's sick, then we have to take him to the doctors. He doesn't have a tail! We need to take him to the doctor mommy!" The girl cried.

"Sorry honey, but if we can't help" The mother re-gripped her daughter's hand and led her away from Tabby. Tabby, awake and listening perked his tattered ears and watched the girl and her mother walk away in the morning light. He quickly picked himself up, limping across the ally floor and meowed. The girl turned around and smiled, walking back to Tabby. "No! Emily move!" The mother rushed to her daughter and picked up a stone, throwing it towards Tabby. Tabby cried out and ran back to his box, cowering behind his old clothes.

"Mommy that isn't nice!" The girl cried.

"That cat is full of germs! I don't want you to get sick!" Her mother cried in disgust. The mother pulled her innocent daughter away in a rush and headed for their car around the corner. Tabby peered out from his box and looked to his left, the door had been left open. With hope, he walked inside. Warmth flooded the fur coat. Tabby purred at this beautiful feeling and continued.

Rooms towering above him with stairs awaited him. One by one, he meowed at the doors and sat there for a few minutes before moving onto the next one. Most never replied while others had a harsh reaction to a stray deformed cat at their door. Rubbish, water and screams were given to him. Best case scenario he would receive nothing and no trouble would be brought to him. He reached the top floor and descended down again. From room one to forty-nine, he tried at every door. He tried each door again and received the same treatments.

At door eleven, he meowed and pushed his paws inside. He wailed and cried. Finally, the door opened. A woman with blonde hair, looked down at the cat. She tilted her head and kneeled down at him. Tabby meowed and hesitantly stepped forward. He brushed his head against her legs and purred. Although the woman didn't pat him, she got up and prepared a bowl of food from him. When she got up to get the food, Tabby followed her. He waited patiently and happily received the food and clean water. After such effort, he was rewarded and returned to his box with a smile.
