Age Representation - Rant

You will not believe how many Harry Potter fanfics I've seen in which an 11-year-old is described as looking like a 20-year-old. Like, no. Have you SEEN an 11-year-old? They're often kind of chubby, especially in the face, and small, and awkward-looking. They're not "the most beautiful girl ever" (almost a direct quote). They are CHILDREN, and should be described as children. With too-long limbs, and chubby cheeks, and not quite knowing how to handle fashion or hair. Adorable, but not beautiful. This goes for boys too, of course. I can show you pictures of me and my brothers at eleven. We were adorable, not attractive.

Not to mention, no kid I know under the age of fifteen or fourteen is even thinking of love or dating except in abstracts. My brother, a very average teenage boy, didn't start dating until last fall. At seventeen. My other brother, who is fourteen, doesn't even think about girls at all. I had a boyfriend by fourteen, but I'm not the norm. No 11-year-old is going to get "a tingly feeling in the stomach" when looking at someone they just met. It's unrealistic. It's a little gross. It's stupid.

Stop making 11-year-olds care. None of them do. Chances are, most real 11-year-olds care more about sports or books or video games more then dating. And that's NORMAL. Don't make your 11-year-old characters act like fifteen-year-olds.
