I'm not magic, unlike what the fairytales say
But I'm not hypnotic either, so why don't you look away?
I'm sorry I repulse you
If I could I'd show you kaleidoscopic eyes, rosy lips, paper-thin thighs with hourglass hips
But there's no 'erised' printed on my outer rim so instead of desire
You'll see the truth, no matter how grim
Okay, maybe not grim. What's another synonym
For someone with idiosyncratic beauty but would rather be prim
And proper like the show-stoppers catwalking down thin runways
Their stomachs even thinner
Because they get paid to be living coat hangers for months on end
Can we stop playing pretend and realize that our glorification of them
Is kind of sick when you put it in fashionable retrospect
If only this candor glass could reflect
Those wonderful qualities you humans reject
Or maybe it's just your abysmal perspective
Pay attention for once, I can't teach you a lesson
On self love, you'll have to learn that yourself
Love yourself love yourself love yourself love yourself love yourself love
Who you are and that will be my reprise
Please
I'm not the monster and you're not the monster
It's the standards behind you
Who are playing the tricks.

A/N: Structure inspired by Lin-Manuel Miranda's "Love is Love" Tony speech (the first draft of this poem was written exactly a year after its conception), the rest inspired by _CasDean_'s poem, "Hurting", in their book, Poetry In The Dark. Do yourself a favor and go read it.
Since I've got your attention, how are you enjoying these raw musings? I know they're not perfect, but I love creating this stuff. It's so therapeutic. Sorry there's only one poem this week. I've got a bunch of ideas lined up, but I've ran into a bit of a block. Should be gone soon.
Star if you like. Add to your reading lists if you want more. Thanks so much for staying aboard. :)
Cheers,
-Katy
