Cultural Appropriation

Ahh.. cultural appropriation. An argument we're most familiar with seeing between whites and every other race that has a unique culture. But this case however is between African Americans and Africans(Nigerians, Ethiopians, South Africans, Egyptians, etc). So this, is my letter to Africans such as the person who created this tweet.

To start off, the original tweet said "you can't call cultural appropriation when you not African and you wearing a dashiki or traditional African clothing." I took a deep breath after reading this because reading it alone was enough to make me cringe. Well baby, to be quite frank, I'm sure we've all realized by now through science, history, and ancestry.com, that just about everyone walking this earth has a little African descent in them. Partially because of how they bred, raped, and traded African slaves, your gene pool has been spread all over the world throughout the years. But, it is also some(not all) traditional Africans who were born in Africa in their lifetime and came to America to try to prove that they are better than African Americans (AA). There's nothing wrong with trying to do better for yourself and your descendants, but when you put down AA because you feel as though you're better because "Oh those AA are so brainwashed to their silly country/government," or "Oh those AA girls/women are so boring we have more to offer." It makes AA feel lesser upon themselves because it's like damn, first white people coming down on us now people who are supposed to be somewhat family are to. It doesn't send a good vibe or message to those of us who want to be united as one.

Let's get real. Every race/culture has taken something from others cultures. Historically, it's been noted. The problem with black/AA or Africans is that y'all want to continue to separate yourselves. One girl commented on the post in this manner "TELL ME WHAT COUNTRY DASHIKIS COME FROM." Well baby to be real honest, I don't fucking know because they don't teach it in school and I don't wear them but clearly you feel pressed about me needing to know where they come from so instead of starting arguments about people not knowing uncommon knowledge, educate those that don't. It's stupid to waste your time arguing over shit that you literally can change. I don't buy dashikis, not only because I don't know the origin, but because most people that sell them here, sell fake/cheap ones. Don't come for me because I don't know your culture because they don't teach me that in "school" and I don't have those roots. Enlighten others to your fucking culture instead of being a bitch about it.

My friend (@cosmoslae on instagram) said "See my piece on this is you actin like I'm wearin dashikis just cause it's fashionable and shit, like no nigga I'm tryna fill that black power shit we been missin since the civil rights era ya feel me." And I couldn't agree more.
