Chapter 15: Dominic

Love is a flying catastrophe and humans are the moving targets. It’s a crucial thing, yes, but it’s what makes us soldiers in battle.

To see the one you love in such a terrible state earns you a hole in the heart without a shotgun. The emotions delve in too deep, it fills in all of you at once that an earthquake breaks you right at the center.

Anna doesn’t deserve to suffer such pain. She’s so young, so damaged. Sometimes I wonder if I could really bring back her shattered pieces. I wonder if it’s possible to love someone so much they could live forever.

Love makes miracles. That’s what I always believe. We humans posses that ability to create them—to shape them. We are capable of making miracles happen because we have the capacity to hope—a capacity for hope.

I watch her sleep tight in the soft lullaby carried by the wind. Her eyes shut like the curtains from a window and I fear I’ll never see the palest blue of her eyes. I can’t bring myself to sleep because I made it a habit to count her breaths. If I get a hang of a hundred I look away to the clouds that inhabit her room. They dip down so low I could touch them. There were no rainbows though, only calligraphic words on her walls lined up to the ceiling. Her room tells a lot of her. Things that she only knew that I haven’t unraveled yet. My only opponent now is time. But I’ll be a runner and I’ll get in the race.

Heaven didn’t go back to school.

I have counted the days with my fingers. I miss her with every beat of my heart and each passing day; it choked me to think that when the time comes she’ll leave me, the days will be as lonely and blank as this.

My feet have its way of making me feel like I’m a robot possessed in my own body. It leads me straight to Anna’s house. That old, faded, pink Victorian house that houses a flower that blooms in the state of melancholy.

I found her sitting at the staircase of their front porch, writing on her notebook. She looked up at me when my shadow touched her. I suddenly felt like Peter Pan had come to take Wendy away to Neverland where all things are okay and time stood still.

She blinked twice at me as if to make sure if I was real. I can’t help but bit back a smile.

“Why are you here?” she asked, startled. She closed her notebook as she turned her full attention to me. “Did something bad happen?”

I shook my head. “No. I just feel sad and suddenly my world is in need of you.”

Her worried face melted away in a soft smile. “You just want to know if I still remember you.” I stiffened and she rolled her eyes skyward. “Yes, I still remember you. Tall boy with very dark hair and big blue eyes. Yeah, I do. Very well. You’re Dominic Savio. You’re a Music Major but you have a talent for over prying on people. Your tenacious attitude makes you very annoying but I love you.” she raised a flirty eyebrow at me. “Am I correct?”

I cannot hide a grin. “Yeah, it’s me. And I love you too.”

She snickered. “Are you always this articulate?”

I shrugged. “Only when I have to.”

Her smile vanished and she looked at me as if I’m too expensive for her to have.
