Look at the map I made for Insurrection.
I feel like a ghost as Every guides me through the palace, an arm wrapped securely around me. I shiver, and I dart my gaze all around, sure someone is going to jump out and grab me. My shell is cracked, and I am now what was underneath. Was I really a frightened little girl all along?
I gave up Lumiere's plans to rescue me. If they're even still coming. Who am I kidding? They were never going to come. I've been telling myself that the whole time. I did nothing wrong. I got myself out of a bad situation. What's the point in suffering for rescue when help is never coming?
"Raksana?" Every asks, his voice gentle, and his hand lightly squeezing my side.
"Yes?"
"Once we get to your room, do you need anything?"
"I'm never going home. . ."
"That's not true. Once this war is over, our countries will work out a deal to exchange you."
I know about the illegitimate heir. They're not letting me go. Ever.
Every opens a door and ushers me into a room and turns on the light. It's the room I was in before. He guides me to the bed and pulling back the cover, he helps me lay down. His arm leaves me, and the warmth goes away.
"Do you remember when we were little?" I ask him as he covers me with the comforter.
"Which part?"
"When you were visiting one of the palaces in Lumiere and you convinced me to sneak with you into the kitchen and steal a few bites of dessert?"
He sits down on the edge of the bed near my stomach. I scoot over, and he lifts his legs onto the bed and lays his head back on headboard. His hands rest in his lap.
"Yes. We got in trouble, and I got a horrid scolding from my mother."
I was punished. I lean my head against his lower arm, feeling safe against him for this moment.
"I miss those times," he says, "before the war started." That's why I brought it up. We were still friends.
"I don't even remember how it started, or what words were said."
"I thought you would at least know how it started."
I look up at him, keeping my head on his arm. "What do you mean?"
His hands tighten into fists. "I shouldn't have said anything."
"No, what is it? Do you remember how it started?"
"I don't remember the words, but I remember who caused it."
I use his arm as leverage to partially sit up. "Who?"
"You, Raksana."
Sorry it's so short but I really liked ending it there ;)
