In Kutou, Tamahome and Chichiri rescued the Maiden of Suzaku, Miaka. She was able to recover at Taiitsukun's, on Mt. Taikyoku. There, for the first time, she saw the horror that Yui had experienced three months earlier. Miaka then knew the whole story. Through Taiitsukun's magic, Miaka realized her importance as the Maiden of Suzaku. She returned to Konan with a new resolution. But something was waiting just around the corner for Miaka. Emperor Hotohori and Tamahome were at odds over her.

    (Miaka) I have only you.

Miaka realized that her feelings leaned towards Tamahome.

Keisuke: "The Maiden of Suzaku learned how Tamahome felt about her, and responded in kind."

Keisuke: Is Miaka really the Maiden of Suzaku?

Keisuke: What makes her such a favorite with men?

Keisuke: "At about that same time, Tamahome sensed something suspicious."

Hotohori: Careful, you two! There's something evil nearby!

guy: I will speak with the Maiden of Suzaku.

guy: An agent of Kutou.

Miaka: They'll quit invading if we give them Tamahome.

Yui: I love Tamahome...so I'll take him away from you.

Miaka: Is this Yui's doing?

Nuriko: Miaka!

Nuriko: What's this chi?

Chichiri: On the ceiling!

Nuriko: Hold it!

Nuriko: I said hold it!

Nuriko: How awful! He broke the wall!

Tamahome: You did it!

Tamahome: He got away.

Miaka: Tamahome...

Miaka: ...don't go. Don't go anywhere.

Tamahome: Lord Hotohori, were villages invaded?

Hotohori: It was yesterday.

Hotohori: Three in Juso Prefecture were attacked by black clothed soldiers.

Hotohori: I'm relieved it didn't go beyond that.

Nuriko: They want to take Tamahome to Kutou?

Hotohori: It would seem so. Tamahome, don't think about it.

Hotohori: Even though we're weaker militarily than the enemy...
