No one else woke from the screaming. It pierced into the room, commanding Gaelle's eyes to open. Bennie stirred a bit but didn't get up. The other girls were on the floor too, sleeping as if nothing had happened. Gaelle nudged Bennie, knowing that part of it was a lie. She must have been awake too. When Bennie didn't swat her away like usual, Gaelle knew she was awake.

She walked toward the window, seeing only one light in the house. The curtains on the first floor were slightly pulled apart at the bottom like it was an accident. She saw foot steps run by it and then it shut. The light from the house was gone just as quick as she noticed it. Seconds later, someone with broad shoulders approached and pulled the curtain completely apart. They paused for a moment where Gaelle feared they could see her standing alone in the dark. Then the curtain was pulled together tightly and didn't move again. There was a long moment of nothing. Even the screaming had stopped. Gaelle just watched the house while everyone else pretended to be asleep.
