Of Land and Sea

They lay side by side in the shallow water, their fingers brushing as the tide rocked back and forth gently. Two creatures, two lands. They were wise enough, even in their youth, to know that pirates and mermaids were never included in the happy endings. 

"I will search for you in every sea I cross." She told him. 

"And I will try to find you in every ship that I pass." He answered quietly, as he always did, since words did not flow off his tongue as smoothly. Her head turned from the canopy of stars to look at him. 

"With every new wave my heart will beat with the anticipation of seeing you beyond the next crest. It will be torture every time the wave passes, but I'll do it anyway. I won't be able to stop myself."

His blue eyes met hers, becoming the shape of a crescent moon as she spoke. 

" I will never forget you in all my life." She whispered. "Even if I'm lucky enough to watch my hair turn grey, your face will be as clear as it is to me now. No wave could ever wash that away."
