You had been visiting Alphys more and more, the relationship between you two healing very quickly. It almost felt as if nothing had ever happened. The two of you would watch anime and chat together, simply enjoying each other's company.
"O-Oh!" Alphys exclaimed excitedly. "I almost forgot to tell you!" She quickly got up from her seat. "I-I found a new DVD in the dump yesterday! I-It looks almost brand new!" She turned so quickly her tail bumped her desk, but she didn't seem to notice at all. She shuffled over to her shelf, looking around. "Oh, where did I put it..?" She mumbled, looking over her vast collection.
You smiled at her as she frantically searched for her newest addition. While you were waiting for Alphys to find her new DVD, a soft thud caught your attention. You looked toward the noise, eyeing the source curiously.
In her haste, Alphys had knocked something off her desk. It looked like a small, worn booklet of some kind. You carefully picked it up, intending to simply put it back on her desk. However, the front of the object caused you to stop, gazing at it with confusion and a hit of curiosity. It was decorated with a highly toonish and...Rather detailed drawing of Undyne. Alphys was there too, lacking the careful details that Undyne possessed. It all looked hand drawn, probably taking the artist several hours, if not days of work.
"I-I must have put it in one of my drawers by mistake. W-Would you mind mo...ving..."
You looked up to see her staring at you with wide eyes. Her face was quickly turning red with vivid blush. You shot a glance at the booklet, then looked back at her. You quickly placed the object on the desk, holding your hands in the air, as if surrendering to authority.
"Wh---Where did you get that..?" Alphys squeaked, trembling slightly as her face continued to redden.
You lowered your hands and quickly explained that she had accidentally knocked it off her desk in her haste, and that all you wanted to do was pick it up and put it back for her. You hoped you hadn't just made a huge dent in your healing relationship. Things had been going so well, if this one mistake ruined everything, you weren't sure what you would do.
Alphys whimpered, quickly hiding her face. "D-Did...Y-You didn't o-open it, d-did you..?" She asked, her voice quiet and muffled behind her hands as she peeked at you sheepishly between her fingers.
You quickly reassured her that you had not even thought of opening it. You had simply picked it up and glanced at the cover for a moment.
She gave a quick sigh, but kept her face hidden.
There was a long, slightly tense silence between the two of you. Your heart began to sink as the silence went on. It seemed as though you really had screwed up, even though it was entirely unintentional. You looked at Alphys with a saddened gaze. You could almost feel the heat of her blush radiating from her body. This made you feel even worse. You hadn't meant to embarrass her.
After several minutes of silence, Alphys slowly lowered her hands, managing to look you in the eyes. "I-I...U-Um..." She stuttered. "I-I suppose y-you want to know...Wh-What that is..."
You had to admit, you were pretty curious. You nodded, but quickly added that she did not have to share anything with you if it made her uncomfortable. You really weren't looking to make this moment anymore tense or awkward.
She sighed again, slowly stepping closer. You made sure to stay out of her way as she reached over and grabbed the booklet. "Th-This...I-Is a...F-Fan fiction..." She explained slowly, her face still glowing red. "O-Of me and...U-Undyne..."
It took all your strength to keep a straight face. You simply nodded calmly, though inside you felt your heart may burst. You couldn't help it, this was adorable.
Alphys quickly held the book to her chest. "Y-You can't tell anyone you saw this!" She exclaimed. "E-Especially not Undyne!" Her voice was desperate. She was really trusting you with an almost painful secret.
You couldn't agree fast enough, nodding and promising up and down that you would not tell a single soul, human, monster, or otherwise.
Your promise seemed to reassure her, even just a little. She still held the book tightly against her body, looking down at the floor and shifting her weight between her feet shyly. Even with your best efforts, it was still pretty clear that she was totally embarrassed about this whole discovery.
You tried to think of something to say to ease her mind. Unable to think of anything more substantial, you brought up the anime she had been looking for to show you.
"O-Oh, right..." She said, still not meeting your eyes. "U-Um...I m-may have to take a r-rain check on that...I-I don't really feel well...S-Sorry..."
You couldn't stand seeing Alphys look so ashamed. You got up, stepping up to her and hugging her.
The scientist jumped in your grip, tensing up until she was as stiff as a statue. She didn't move. Neither did you.
After a few moments, you stepped back, looking her in the eyes. You told her that she had nothing to be ashamed about, and that you didn't think any less of her.
She stared at you with total disbelief, as if you had read her thoughts and said exactly what needed to be said. Her blush faded a bit and her eyes wavered, as if she may cry.
You quickly told her that you actually thought it was super sweet she had put so much time and thought into her crush on Undyne. You rubbed the back of your head and jokingly admitted to being jealous of Undyne, wishing someone cared so much about you.
Alphys' eyes widened again, her blush only tinting her cheeks versus her entire face. She once again seemed surprised by your words. She managed a half smile. "R-Really..?"
You nodded, returning her smile.
She looked down at the booklet, her grip on it loosening as she held it out in her hands. She didn't say anything, apparently thinking about something.
"Did...Did you want to read some of it?" She offered, though her tone suggested she regretted her words, even as they left her mouth.
While you were practically dying to see it, you could tell that Alphys would rather keep the private stories to herself. The fact she had even offered something like that proved just how much she trusted you, and how much she valued you as a friend. Despite your desire, you shook your head, thanking her and politely declining.
Though she did nothing to express it, you could see the relief in your eyes. That had been the answer she wanted, the right answer.
"U-Um, yeah, m-maybe some other day." She agreed, acting as though she had wanted you to say yes. Maybe she secretly had wanted you to read it, so she wouldn't be keeping it all to herself. You simply nodded, keeping the thought in the back of your mind. Some other time, some other place, you thought. When she really wanted to share with you, if she ever did, she would offer it with more confidence.
"S-So, still want to check out my new anime?" She asked, now completely comfortable in your presence again, which was a huge relief to you.
You happily accepted the invitation, helping her search for the new DVD.
Though, in the very back of your mind, something was still buzzing. Something didn't feel quite right. You dismissed it as your secret desire to see the cute stories Alphys had dreamt up, but even after that decision, it would not leave you alone. You ignored it, not allowing it to take your energy.
Seeing romance blossom fills you with...determination.
