You stared into Alphys' eyes, the horrific feeling of dread slowly suffocating you. You feared each breath you took would be your last; that you would simply drop dead any moment now. You begged your mouth to say something, anything, to reassure Alphys that you were, at the very least, still alive. Through sheer determination, you managed to wake yourself enough to speak.
"Alphys, I..."
As soon as you had managed to break free from it, the paralysis returned. What were you supposed to say? They were both staring at you with concerned eyes. You couldn't say you wanted to talk to both of them without waving a huge red flag over your head. There was no convincing them that everything was fine, not now. You cursed yourself for making such a scene. You should have just smiled and waved it off. You should have just left pleasantly and freaked out once you were out of earshot. You should have-
"(Y/N), did something happen?" Alphys asked, growing more and more worried as she gazed into your eyes. Clearly your expression was not reassuring her that things were fine. "I-Is everyone okay? Is someone hurt?"
How badly you wanted to answer truthfully.
Yes, someone is hurt. It's me Alphys, I'm hurting.
But you would not dare say such a thing here and now. Nothing good could come of this situation. No matter what you said, you had dug yourself into a hole.
You may as well lie in it.
You sighed, standing up straight and no longer fighting Alphys' grip that prevented your escape. Now was the time. You hated the situation you had put yourself in, but there was no way to get out of it now. You had to face them. Your feelings, your friends, and the elephant in the room.
The battle had started, and there was only one option.
No FIGHT, no MERCY.
Only ACT."Alphys, I need to talk to you and Undyne." You started, glancing up at Undyne as she now stood right behind Alphys.
"W-Well, we're both here now," Alphys replied, glancing back at Undyne while keeping ahold of your wrist "s-so why did you try to leave?"
"I..." You could feel your mind beginning to freeze up again. If you didn't keep talking, the paralysis would consume you once more, and the tension in the room would only grow more suffocating. You had to keep going. You could practically see your SOUL appear before you, radiating with the red glow of determination.
You had to keep going.
This battle could not be fled from. You tugged at your arm, signaling for Alphys to let go.
Alphys did so, though she seemed a bit reluctant. This was the most worried you had seen her in a long time. And you had caused it. You felt like you were going to be sick.
You apologized, realizing now that they were very worried at this point. You tried your best to defuse the situation, using carefully picked language. You assured them that no one was hurt and that there was no immediate danger to anyone they knew.
They both visibly relaxed at that reassurance. Undyne seemed to completely calm down at this point. Alphys, however, still had concern in her eyes. Not as potent as before, but still enough to send stinging sensations through your heart.
You miraculously managed a smile as you spoke. You reiterated that, yes, the fact that both of them were here now was indeed perfect. You even agreed with Undyne's joke about Sans and Papyrus and their sense of timing. As you kept talking, you could feel the tension fading. That's it, defuse the situation, then lay down the bomb shell as gently as possible. With any luck, you could still salvage this.
