But right then, in that single fateful second of meeting his eyes, my instincts failed me. My eyes widened as my finger slipped from the trigger, my body recoiling away from the gun unnaturally. I choked on my own breath, fighting to regain my absent will. My grip loosened on the weapon as my arms fell to my side. I could do nothing but stand there, still and silent, staring at him.
For a moment, he only returned my gaze, the shock frozen on his face. But then, upon realizing my state, the expression melted into an impish smile.
