I’m pretty sure mine and my brother’s jaws hit the floor, or we were pretty damn close to it.  Neither Carson nor Daniel had mentioned having another relative.

“Her name is, or was, Zoey Allen.”  Carson said.

“What happened to her?  Is she still alive?”  I asked.

“Well, it seems that Carson wanted us to believe she disappeared off the face of the earth. Do you have any idea how much work I had to do to see what happened to her?”

“I don’t want to know”

Dad smiled for the first time since we had gotten there.  “Then we’ll leave it at that.  Apparently, Carson gave her to his brother to raise after Sarah died.  He was able to keep Daniel because Sarah’s parents took him in until Carson was able to take care of him more efficiently.  Zoey was only three years old when this happened, Daniel was seven.”

“So, does Daniel know that he has a sister?  Would he remember that?”  I asked.

“I think he does.  I was looking on Daniel’s computer to see if I could narrow down where he and his dad had gone to and who exactly they were after.  On his calendar Zoey’s birthday was marked.  That’s what made me realize that there were more pieces to the puzzle than I originally thought. ”

“Does she know?”  I asked.

“No.”

“Well how does that make sense?”

“I read the terms that Carson’s brother, Anthony, wrote up for adopting her.  First off, Carson was to have no contact with her at all until she turned 18.  Her last name was changed to Smith, and as far as she knows, Anthony and his wife are her biological parents.  Unless Anthony had a change of heart and told her about her real father, which I seriously doubt, that’s the situation with Zoey.”

“Why did Anthony do that?  Did he and Carson not get along or something?”  John asked.  How he gets credit for being the smart one, I don’t know.

“Oh they didn’t.  Or don’t.  Apparently, Anthony hated the work Carson and Sarah did,

and wanted no part in it.  He didn’t like government agencies; he seemed to have appreciated private businesses more.”

“We have to contact her.  If Al Qaeda finds out about her she could be in danger.” John said as if he were stating the most complicated thing in the universe.

Again, I have no clue why he gets the credit.  I think that the last two things he’s said are the obvious.

“I already bought us tickets to where they live; Fresno, California.  We’re leaving Wednesday morning so we’ll get there about Wednesday evening.”  Dad said rising from his chair to get a paper from the fax machine.

I rolled my eyes and groaned.  “Seriously?  More traveling?"

"Are you that afraid of flying?" John asked with a stupid grin on his face.

"I'm not afraid of flying, " I responded a little too defensely.  "I just afraid of suddenly not flying.  Besides, I need sleep! "

“Well, if you just want to sit here and do nothing that’s fine too.  Miss out seeing all those California girls.  That’s fine.”  Dad said

He had a point.  How could I turn down a trip like that?  I got out of my chair.  “I’ll be packing if anyone needs me.”

Like? Or was it way to short?  Let me know! :)
