The opposite of courage in our society is not cowardice, it is conformity.Rollo May

I just finished my classes for the day when I got the call from my mom. She told me that it wasn't safe to come home and that I needed to find my father, that he would protect me.
She told me to look for a black 1967 Chevy Impala. She gave me a phone number and his last known location, in coordinates. As if I'm meant to know what to do with them.
I'm not completely sure what she meant, but what I do know is that she should have known I wouldn't listen to her. So, that's why Milly and I are on the road driving to Kansas right now, because I don't listen.
After many stops and arguments we finally made it back to our home town.
We hesitantly parked outside my childhood home and were walking inside when I caught a whiff of something that smelled like rotting eggs.
"Woah do you smell that?" Milly said, her face contorted in disgust. I nodded my head in agreement.
"I have a really bad feeling about this, Nova." Milly said, looking at me wearily.
I slowly turned my head to look at her and gulped, "Yeah, me too."
I quickened my pace to get to the door. Milly was right, something was wrong, very wrong.
I grabbed the "hidden" spare key my mom always keeps under the door mat. As soon as I opened the door I gagged at the smell.
"Hello?" I called out, getting more nervous by the second.
"Mom?" No answer.
We are walking around my house looking for anything to hint to us what might've happened.
"Nov, this place is a mess." Milly said as we entered the dining room, and it was.
The chairs that I used to sit in every single holiday with my friends in celebration were now smashed up into pieces.
The large cabinet full of rare salt and pepper shakers that my grandmother used to collect sat on its side, the contents inside broken and shattered.
My mother wasn't necessarily the most tidy but she would never have let our prized home, which she worked so hard to obtain, get this messy.
"It looks like someone robbed the house," Milly stated, looking around in fear.
I could feel my heart rate pick up, "Or someone was trying to defend themselves from an attack."
