"They traveled. They ate together. They did the things couples do all in nine years. Why did they break up?" she asked him. "If going to places together won't save a relationship, or the memories, or the number of years together . . . then what else?"

"The prevailing theory," he said, "is to fight for the relationship no matter what the situation is."

It was a good ending for a short piece, she thought. But she still had one question—a question she chose to keep to herself.
