I remember one time in class my teacher gave us all blank pages of notebook paper.

She said, "list all the characteristics that you like about yourself."

I stared at my paper, taking the question seriously.

Sometimes I liked my laughter.

Sometimes I liked how my chest would not feel so heavy on days when I was alone.

Sometimes I liked myself when I was sleeping- dreaming dreams and immersed in another reality.

After five minutes she made us stop.

She said, "studies show that the majority of people will write physical characteristics without listing things such as nice, sweet or kind."

I raised my hand.

"Mrs. I didn't list any physical characteristics," I said.

My teacher walked over and said, with a sigh that could weigh down the world,

"I never know which is worse. Listing to many. Or listing none at all."
