⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀THE OLD AND HONORABLE HOUSES of Targaryen and Velaryon both hailed from Old Valyria, when dragons roamed the skies. House Velaryon were loyal supporters of the Throne, and oft married into the normally incestuous Targaryen bloodline.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It was from the history of these two houses that Aerys II Targaryen, King of the Seven Kingdoms, offered his first and oldest daughter to the noble Jacaerys Velaryon, so that they might bear him more Targaryen heirs.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀It was his decree that all children born of this match were to be declared Targaryens, instead of their rightful surname of Velaryon, as Jacaerys himself was a descendant of Rhaenys Targaryen, who they called "The Queen that Never Was."

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀His daughter, who was twelve at the time of her marriage, bared no heirs until she was much older, at the age of twenty-five. Every birth she had was stillborn, like her mother before her.

Eventually, she had not one, but two children.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀They were named Rhaene and Maekar, and they were twins.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Born after the fall of House Targaryen, they instead adopted the name Velaryon for their own protection, and kept on Driftmark, a sister-island to Dragonstone.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀When the dust settled, and the allegiances were set in stone, Jacaerys began to look for suitable matches for his children. They would be married into noble houses, that much he would be sure of.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Princess Rhaene and Prince Maekar Targaryen spent their lives knowing of what could have been, had their Uncle not kidnapped and raped Lyanna Stark of Winterfell.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀Rhaene and Maekar would've been married, had history been kind to them.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀But fate is never kind when you play the game of thrones.
