~Chapter Five~
The one thing I learnt about life was that it was a maze,A labyrinth with so many twists and turns on the way but along with the spirals, there always had to be a right path. It had been two weeks since I had been released from the hospital and here I was, trying to get some sleep. Even with my eyes squeezed tight, I could feel the palpitating lights. It was no use, no matter how many times I flung myself around the bed or entwined myself among the blankets, how many pillows I pressed desperately over my head or counted the damn sheep; sleep would not come. The flicker seemed like it had a life of its own, its pulse giving me no rest. Not able to stop thinking about that nightmare, I kept wondering if Adrian would really go to such an extreme. But it didn't matter because sadly, he was the monster who had no soul. He was the monster that I had fallen in love with.
"Alexis." A voice shouted. A voice that I would recognize anywhere on the face of the Earth. Think of the devil and he'd appear.
"Alexis!" Adrian repeated. Sighing, I unlocked the door and peeped down the wooden staircase, surprise surprise. I'd come face to face with the devil himself. He smirked and roughly grabbed me by my hair, pulling me into the living room. I felt numerous strands of my hair being yanked off as he pushed me on the couch. His glare reflected hatred- pure, wild hatred.
"Mr. Anderson invited us to his christmas ball tomorrow." Adrian spat.
"Okay." I simply answered, hesitant to irk him even further.
"I expect you to be ready at 7:10." He ordered.
"Can I go shopping today?" I asked, desperate to spend some time with myself, away from the monster.
"It's a good idea. You look like a pig in these clothes." He made a face as he headed towards the master bedroom.
My face showed distress as I stared at myself in the cracked mirror. Unable to bear anymore of my pathetic reflection, I pulled the phone from my pocket and dialed Rose's number.
"Hey Lexi." Rose greeted with the usual chirpiness.
"Hey. Want to go shopping with me?" I asked her.
"Sure pick. I'll you up in 5." As promised, I heard a loud honk after five minutes.
"What's up with you?" She asked while revving up the engine.
"Nothing is wrong, Rose" I lied smoothly.
"Uh, I'm your best friend, Lexi. I know when you lie and when you tell the truth."
"Can we not talk about this, please?" I asked. She must have heard the desperate please in my voice for she stopped the car in front of Forever 21 without giving me a single glance.
"Hey rose" I asked as we walked through the door.
"Yeah?"
"Will you come to the party with me? I don't want to be alone there." I asked, flicking through the clothes without meeting eye contact. Feeling a velvet jacket, I waited for the reply.
"I'm already invited, Lexi. And I won't let you go alone, you should have known that by now." She said encouragingly.
"Let's go shopping." I smiled, mustering up all the excitement that I could. We ran through the store like two teenage girls, picking up clothes and heaping the unwanted ones in the corner. A heap. Finally, I chose a one that seemed more fitting than the others.
"Oh my god Lexi, you look so pretty?!" It was Rose's first exclamation.
I looked in the mirror and saw a girl who was clad in a soft, silken gown that shimmered magnificently beneath the trembling lights of the chandeliers; a long bodice of soft cream with an open neckline that generously displayed her ample bosom. Her skirt flowed from her waist in layered folds, The delicate patterns on the hem of her dress glistened with their quiet beauty and elegance. She was, in her unwavering beauty, an angel of soft blue, delicate as a butterfly's wings, ablaze with a light of her own. The girl, or rather I, felt like a princess in this gown.
"I will buy it" I said, running back to the dressing room and changing into my skinny jeans and yellow tank top. I took the dress and went to pay for the dress. After paying for the dress, we headed towards American eagle and Hollister. Two and a half hours later, the six o'clock sun sunk as we took a quick bite of Subway. At the end of this shopping trip, I had bought three shorts, four dresses and six pair of heels.
We pulled back into the driveway. Thanking Rose, I unlocked the door and walked up the stairs. As I dropped the bags on bed, a thought crossed my mind. Elated at the sudden brainwave, I pulled the phone from my pocked and dialed Rose's number.
"Lexi?"
"Hey, I need you help" I bit my nails nervously.
"Sure."
"Thanks, Rose." That was my best friend. Always ready to help a person in need.
"Tell me what you need."
"Pack your bags, Rose. We are going to London tomorrow".
