People claim
Sticks and stones
May break your bones
But words will never hurt
That's a load of bullWords hurt
Especially when
They are hurtled at you
Out of nowhere
When you try to help
Nothing is ever good enoughWords are more powerful
Then any weapon
Then any poison
Especially when they are used
Without much thoughtBefore opening mouth
And inserting both feet
Think
Will what I say next
Will I hurt that person
Will they feel bad
Especially if they don't deserve itNo one likes to be treated
Like the proverbial punching bag
For someone who has no other
Outlet for their problemsWhy do kind people
Instead of a thank you in return
Have to receive evil words?
Are we all a glutton for punishment? The only way to make sure
Those kinds of words
Don't hit their mark
Is to distance self from person
Who can't seem to control anything
Including their own mouthWe all can be there
Can want to help
To reach out
But when what we give
Is taken
Twisted
And spit out in a negative vibe
Then it is time to say goodbyeIf and when
The person understands
And fixes themselves
For the better
Can the friendship, relationship, partnership
Be salvageableUntil that point in time
Their words
Are their ultimate undoing
And all the rest of us can do
Is wish them well
And move on without themToward the future
With people
Who don't fit in that category
Who love us
And whom we love equally in returnRemember
Choose your words
Wisely, thoughtfully
You never know
When you can lose
A great friendTrust, respect, and forgiveness
Are hard won things
To return
Only those who strive for improvement
Can have any hope of getting those backWords
Are powerful things
Always were
Always will be
To change the future
One must look at self
In the presentIs it time for a change?
