Kaneki couldn't sleep, no matter what, he simply couldn't sleep. He stared out his hotel window and watched as two figures leapt across the rooftops, soon a third followed in pursuit. He watched with curious eyes, wondering what they were doing out so late. Kaneki stood up and slid the window open, placing one foot on the window sill before he could smell someone behind him.

"Where are you going?" The voice asked.

Kaneki turned around, only seeing round glasses and the moonlight reflecting off them, leaving the rest of him in the dark.

"Out." Kaneki answered.

"Where?" He asked, stepping out of the darkness.

"Just going for a walk Kabuto. I can't seem to sleep tonight." Kaneki said, turning back to the window.

"Be back soon, you know Lord Orochimaru will get angry." Kabuto warned.

Kaneki didn't respond, he jumped out of the window and walked along the empty streets of the village, hearing only the sounds of crickets in the bushes. He walked in the direction of the three figures, he kept a slow pace until the hotel window was out of sight. The moment he couldn't see the window he took off, running faster than before and jumping onto the rooftops. He ran at a steady pace until the scent of blood made him worry. If blood was nearby, then death couldn't be far. Kaneki ran faster before he passed a familiar apartment. Himika's apartment.

'Is Himika awake?' Kaneki thought running over to her bedroom window.

Kaneki stuck to the wall using his chakra and tapped lightly on her window. It only took a few seconds before Himika opened the window, fully clothed and wide awake.

"Good evening, couldn't sleep?" Himika asked, lifting herself onto the edge of the window.

"Yes, I couldn't sleep. I came to get you in case I needed backup, I smell blood, familiar blood." Kaneki explained.

"Lead the way." Himika said, climbing out of her window and onto the roof.

Kaneki lead them across the rooftops towards the overwhelming scent of blood, Himika couldn't help the scowl that made its way onto her face when she noticed the trail of sand that extended in front of them.

By the time they got there he was already dead, Dosu, one of Kaneki's temporary teammates had been crushed to death by sand. Kaneki and Himika both turned to stare at the boy who killed him. Red hair, cold eyes, no doubt it was Gaara. Kaneki stared at Dosu's corpse in pity, not feeling any sympathy for his teammate. Gaara seemed to snap out of it and stared at the person he killed, not showing any signs of regretting it.

"He's better off dead. He was weak and arrogant." Kaneki scoffed.

Himika was slightly shocked that he didn't care in the slightest about his death, but she shrugged it off, figuring that they weren't at all close.

"You don't care for your teammate?" Gaara asked, tilting his head.

"He wasn't really even my teammate, and he was weak." Kaneki answered, turning to face Gaara.

Kaneki bent down next to Dosu's corpse and tore off a leg, stripping it of any clothing and taking a bite. He chewed for a minute before spitting out the piece.

"Gross, sand." Kaneki muttered wiping his face.

Gaara only stared at the two strangely, wondering why they were picking at his corpse. Himika was about to try a bite before Kaneki smacked the leg away from her.

"Normally I wouldn't waste food like this, but it tastes like sand." Kaneki said.

Himika sighed and stood up, slightly disappointed that there wouldn't be any fresh flesh to eat.

"Why would you eat in front of him anyway?" Himika asked, looking at Gaara who was still staring at them.

"I just have the feeling he wouldn't tell anyone." Kaneki said, although there was a threat behind those words.

Himika nodded, clueless about the plan that Suna and Oto shared.

"I won't tell, if you don't tell anyone you saw me." Gaara said, sand swirling around him.

"Agreed." Kaneki said, Himika nodding her head.

Gaara was turning to walk away, but suddenly a kunai was thrown at him, the knife bounced off his sand and the attacker landed in front of the three. Himika recognized the man from the chuunin exam preliminaries. His name was Hayate.

"Damn it...." Kaneki muttered.

Kaneki knew that it wasn't good to be caught like this, hanging out in the middle of the night next to a corpse with someone from Suna and Konoha. Kaneki leaned over to whisper in Himika's ear.

"We might need to fight our way out of this one." Kaneki whispered.

Himika shook her head side to side, not wanting to harm anyone from her village.

"You three are coming with me to the Hokage." Hayate said, taking out more kunai.

"Afraid not." Kaneki said, bringing out his red kagune.

Gaara said nothing, but his sand swirled around his feet, ready to protect and attack. Himika stood back, deciding she didn't want to be involved. Kaneki saw that Himika was standing back and took a few steps back.

"It's too late Himika, he's seen us together." Kaneki said.

Hayate threw shuriken and kunai at Kaneki and Gaara which were easily deflected using their defenses. Their attacker charged at them, launching his attack, it seemed like Hayate would lose until he snuck a paper bomb onto Kaneki's back. Himika ran over to try to get the bomb off, but it was too late. The bomb detonated and Kaneki was sent flying across the roof, knocked unconscious. He wasn't dead of course, but Himika hated seeing him get hurt, it was her fault that he was trying to protect her. Himika's purple kagune slipped out of her back, gleaming under the moonlight. Himika's face now void of emotion as she approached Hayate who was shaking in fear as he gripped a kunai.

"W-what even are y-you?" Hayate yelped as she got closer.

"A monster." Himika replied, stabbing one of her tentacles into his chest.

Hayate coughed up some blood before taking his final breath, any signs of life leaving his eyes. Himika turned to face Gaara before walking past him to where Kaneki laid unconscious, his back steaming from the bomb. Himika's kagune wrapped gently around his body as she lifted him off the ground and sped off to her apartment.

Gaara watched as Himika leapt away into the night wondering about what just happened before turning to leave. He remembered the words the boy told him and vowed to keep quiet.

Himika removed Kaneki's headband and placed a wet cloth and his forehead to bring his temperature down. She rolled Kaneki onto his side and applied burn cream to his back, which was now exposed because the bomb burned the back of his shirt. Himika sat awake, watching over Kaneki for around two hours before he woke up. Himika handed Kaneki his headband as he sat up.

"I've made my decision." Himika said.

"Go on." Kaneki replied as he tied his headband back on.

"I want to run away with you."
