My breath is shaking as I rub my sweaty palms across my jeans, glancing around the Suckers as I wait for Keith. He's the first person from my old life that I'm going to see again, and I can only imagine the weirdness of being tempted by my best friend's blood. My recent turning into a vampire seemingly doesn't bother him. On the contrary, he more than once told me he was glad that he didn't have to worry about me dying anymore.
Apparently, everyone had assumed I wouldn't make it through the leukaemia.
We have been on the phone daily since I dared to call him about a week ago, shortly after my brief exchange with Dael. He also encouraged me to talk to my mother, which had gone quite well if I ignore the flood of tears that had streamed down my face at the sound of her voice cracking when she realized it was me.
Dael had told her what had happened, urging her not to open the door if I showed up. She still thought he had been exaggerating, and I have no intention of ever proving her otherwise. There's no reason to expose her to the fact that her son has turned into a cold-blooded murderer. I'm not that much of a danger anymore, though I'm still not allowed to be alone around humans.
While mom knows that I was against Dael turning me, she actually asked me to forgive him. They have never been on the best terms since my mom disapproves of his bossy attitude, yet she's honestly taking his side. Unable to cope with her trying to coax me back into his arms, I haven't talked to her much afterwards. If she knew what I had done, she certainly would be thinking differently.
My eyes suddenly catch a glimpse of Keith making his way through the crowd. I startle out of my thoughts and quickly get up from the bar stool to make my way over to him. He's never minded my association with vampires, yet he himself had never strayed that way, even though he'd definitely strayed literally everywhere else.
I wave an arm as he glances in my direction, and his body becomes frighteningly still as he stares back at me, mouth forming the smallest o-shape even though he's not even breathing. Slowly, I lower my hand, waiting for him to approach. His throat moves as he gulps before finally regaining his composure. A second later, he's standing awkwardly in front of me. His face is pale.
"Hell, you look-" His eyes roam my body, then settle on my face. His forehead wrinkles in a deep frown before he finishes, "young."
"Yeah, hard to notice," I murmur, glancing aside when he simply stares into my ruby eyes. A thick silence settles on us, and I quietly invite him over to the bar.
"But you're not drinking anymore, right?"
"No, am not," I reply with a sigh, drumming my fingers on the counter. Somehow, talking on the phone had been so much easier. Now my throat is tight as I await the catastrophe.
Keith bites down on his lower lip.
"Just say what's on your mind."
He groans, rubbing his eyes.
"Fine. It's just, I mean, look at yourself. I knew you'd turned into a vampire, but shit, Ally, you look twenty-something again. And there's this whole vampire-charm-thing about you, like, I can't even remember the last time I was this nervous around you."
"I'm not going to bite you, Keith."
"Ally, not that that's not been on my mind, but really, I'm not talking about that kind of nervous."
He chuckles uncomfortably.
Oh. My gaze snaps from my fingers onto his face, and I instantly notice the slight blush on his cheeks. He takes a deep breath, avoiding eye contact.
"This is so awkward," he murmurs absentmindedly, probably more to himself. The music blaring across the dance floor most likely would've prevented me from even hearing these words if I was still human.
"Not just that you've suddenly got these weird ass red eyes, but hell, Ally, you're hot," he stresses as if this was of utmost importance. Somehow, he sounds a bit ridiculous, and I can't help but grin at his seriously troubled expression. "Like, you know I've met some vampires before, and I know Dael - we can agree that's one hot vampire - but you literally have these big blinking letters on your forehead saying amazing sex god."
I snort.
"Ally, I know you've never thought as much of your looks as everyone else, so believe me when I say your gorgeousness radar is severely off. Hell, even I would let you bite me, looking like that."
My lips tremble, and I only stop them from curling back into a snarl by slapping a hand across them. I press my fingers closer, pushing against the base of my fangs to ease the sudden itching. Keith frowns at me.
"What?"
Neil puts a drink onto the counter in front of him, startling his attention away from me.
"Don't talk about biting in front of him or you'll see that sex god in action."
He gives me that look that tells me I am still under supervision, even if Theo is not tagging along at my heels. Carefully, I drop my hand from my face, managing a strained smile. My heart is still fluttering nervously, though, and I'm overly aware of Keith's scent lingering around us.
"Keith, this is Neil. He's one of the vampires looking after me," I introduce the handsome brunette to my friend. Keith's gaze travels back and forth between us, and I can only hope that he's going to let it drop.
"Well, nice to meet you, then."
They shake hands over the counter before Neil urges him to take a sip of the drink, then goes on in one of his typical monologues, elaborating on all his not-so-secret ingredients. He's quick to disappear after earning some praise from his newest customer, and Keith stares at his back in disbelief.
"Is this guy serious?"
"He's a bit of an odd-ball when it comes to bartending," I admit with a shrug.
"Okay, well, haven't really met a vampire who isn't. What about the guy you're living with? Theo?"
"He's actually just a nice guy, and he's been a great help with everything. Don't know what I would be doing without him."
My mind involuntarily drifts back to the small apartment, and Theo's arms wrapping around me from behind as he buried his nose in my neck, mumbling incomprehensibly since he had been barely awake when I had gotten up. He'd trailed tender kisses across my shoulder while he had lectured me on how to behave in public.
"And you're?" Keith's voice trails off as he stretches the word. I blink at him, confused about what he is asking. When it dawns on me, the dreamy smile that has crept onto my lips quickly falters. Keith curses quietly.
"Damn, Ally. Dael's going to kill me when he finds out."
"Why would he kill you?" I furrow my brow, suspecting the worst. "Keith, what have you been telling him?"
He groans and buries his face in his hands, hiding from me.
"Did you tell him where I am?"
"No!" he says quickly. "But he knows I'm visiting, and I promised to tell him how you're doing, to check if you're okay, who-"
"Who I'm screwing?" I snap, irritated. "How about you tell him that it's none of his fucking business."
"Ally, but you guys are still-"
"No, we are not," I cut in sharply, sick of talking about Dael - and also unable to continue to because my voice is starting to shake. It has risen in pitch as well, though I doubt Keith is going to notice the subtle change. He pulls his brows together.
"I'm not saying that I don't get why you're angry, but-"
"Then don't, Keith. Just don't. Dael and I are done."
"But why?"
He honestly has no fucking clue. My trembling lips pressed into a pale line, I stare back at him, mirroring his disbelief. The events of the last two months loom over me. They cast dark shadows across my mood - and the person that I had believed myself to be. Now I am a murderer, and I find myself unable to confide in Keith.
