"Here you go." Neil puts the glass down in front of me. The ice cubes clink against their restraints and another, swaying in the light brown liquor. I snatch up the whiskey, swirling it before I take a sniff. "Just don't drink it."
"Just reminiscing," I tell him with a sigh and close my eyes. The scent brings back the memories of sipping the expensive alcohol that Dael had liked to buy me. I had been sitting on the patio, looking out over the fountain peacefully running water from top to bottom, and watched the sunset in the distance, drawing the landscape in shades of orange and yellow and sometimes glistening red. Dael had interrupted with a sheepish grin, then poured me a glass of whiskey older than I had been.
I put the glass down with a heavy heart and push it over to Neil. His smile is understanding when he picks it up, only to hold it close to his chest. He trails the rim with a slender finger.
"Not quite what you wanted to remember?"
"Don't know," I admit with a shrug. After all, there's not much but Dael to remember, and I feel my heart cry for him. Each pump is like a stream of tears shed in his memory. I heave a shaky breath. "Don't you sometimes wish you could turn back time?"
He sighs and tosses the whiskey down the drain. "Let's sit down somewhere. I think it's time for my break anyways."
We make our way over to the booth farthest away from the stage slash dancefloor, depending on what time of the day it is - or night, in this case. A handful of people, humans and vampires, are grinding their body against another, and my sensitive ears are happy to get away from the loud baseline. Neil pats the couch next to where he's sitting, and I slouch down.
"You've been hanging around a lot since you visited your mom," he points out and I shrug. "Trouble in paradise?"
A bitter laugh crawls up my throat. "Paradise burned down months ago."
"I'm sorry, Al. I know it sounds crappy, but you're not the first to go through this. It's gotten better already, hasn't it? And it'll keep getting better."
"Great, I'm not killing people anymore. What an accomplishment," I remark drily and shake my head at him. "I had paradise, Neil. Really, it-"
My voice breaks off suddenly, betraying the feelings of my heart beneath the anger. I squeeze my eyes shut against the pain that bubbles up, a lethal volcano. Usually, I would've been cuddling with Theo, listening to him go on and on about some stupid nonsense that has him excited. I wouldn't have had to think about anything, and if some melancholy had overcome me, I would've just fucked it out of my system.
Neil slips a hand around my neck to pull me against his chest, close enough so his scent wafts up my nose. I grimace at the unmistakable desire to bury my fangs in his neck and drink my fill - something I've been doing daily since I came back about two weeks ago. I've listened in on thoughts without a care and fucked each human with the despair of someone losing his mind. Honestly, I can barely look into Theo's eyes anymore - it's like I've been cheating on him.
"If you need a place, we've got a free room upstairs. You can work for your rent," Neil suggests softly, and I nod slowly, feeling the slightest sense of relief. He sighs. "He really likes you, you know?"
"He loves me," I correct bitterly and Neil tenses, whispering a curse.
"He told you?"
"Before I left."
