violet and xander
are the first and only
people in the library,
in fact they usually are.
the librarian greets them
by name and points them
to the new book section.
eagerly, they walk towards it
when suddenly he stops.
"how about this?"
xander asks, running
his finger down the spine
of a weathered copy
of the crooked kids.
violet rolls her eyes
but pulls it out anyways.
"how many times
have we read this again?"
she wonders aloud.
xander pulls it from her
and flips it to the back page.
he touches the tally marks
gently, counting them
one by one.
"24."
together they had vowed
to read the book
a million and one times
before they died.
"only 24?"
violet purses her lips
and tilts her head.
"hmm... alright."
they set the book
on the front desk
where the librarian
signs it out in violet's name
with a chuckle.
"again? i don't
think i've ever
seen a book
so well loved
as this one."
the pair shrug, grinning.
"we've never read a
book more worth loving."
